Looking at these, especially the 1.9 cdti 150 bhp. Any advice? What are they like? I like the look and size of them but know little about them and don't see many on the road.

Were they not like the Renault Avantime - only ever sold a *few*?

Some were only 4-seaters, so a bit like the original Passat CC - restricted market.

thought they were all 4 seaters...
The 2.0T is nice and they come well spec'd, but they're no sports car handling wise.

I nearly bought one a few years ago. Glad I didn't as the only two people I know with them had not but problems, eletrical and mechanical.
Look elsewhere for more reliable and enjoyable cars.

See those Fiat Cromas? That's a signum in a floppy hat and shades. That's how good they were.

4 comfy seats, but there is a fifth seat, just a little small

Very well specced, comfy, barge like, massive turning circle, practical

I had a 3.0 v6 diesel, wasn't that quick. Was my least favourite car as I just didn't love it, was boring, and not fun to drive. Wasn't bad, just had nothing about it

Part exchanged it against an E61 5 series

The 1.9 Tdi is a very problem prone engine - muchos pasetas to maintain. And then there are the fabled GM electrics...........

Like Horatio above said - don't do it!

The wife had the 1.9 tdi 150, well spec'd motor and great on long journeys, we were going to run it into the ground after it was paid off, got a service just before it was paid off and everthing went tits up a couple weeks after, electrics, gearbox, clutch assembly, exhaust and a few other things i can't remember, cost about 2k to get it on the road and sold for less than that.

Why not buy the Saab 'version'? At least its attractive and better built

My boss had a Vectra SRI with the 1.9 dizzle engine. He did loads of miles in it but even so had endless problems with EGR valve, alternator, turbo etc.

Its a shame because yes, they're dirt cheap and the interior especially was designed by a work experience lad in his lunch break but it was comfy, big and handled ok.

We had a Saab at work with the same 1.9 engine. It had all kinds of little niggly issues, but, major probs with fuel pump , electrics and turbo. These issues all occurred at under 45k miles.
That said, the Golf 1.9 I had at the same time as the Saab was used by another guy, was also problematic: I've never needed a clutch at less than 120000 miles in all the company cars I've had, the Golf one went at 28000 and so did the turbo.
Wasn't the Signum basically a Vectra but designed to have less boot space and huge legroom for rear passengers ? Seem to remember it being marketed as a vehicle to travel in as opposed to one for carting kit about.
In general terms I've never had an issue in years gone by in any of the 3 Vauxhalls ive had or the Saab 95. That said and despite the crap Golf, none of the half dozen VAG vehicles I've had , either company ones, or my own vans , have ever been a problem either.

Came across this, and have to say it's the first Vauxhall I actually quite fancied owning..

My brother has one parked up not in use (he bought his wife a polo as she found it a bit big). He kept hold of it as his youngest has just passed his test but to be honest I don't think he would ever get him insured on it. I can get you some pics and more details if you were interested. I am sure my bro would sell if someone was interested.

The 1.9 engine is famous for swirl flap failure. In fact everything will fail, probably . High pressure fuel pump , DMF , EGR , Turbo and swirly things.

I think there is a delete available on the ecu and hardware removal. IIRC its a joint effort between GM and Alfa the 1.9 , some are perfectly fine and will go on to 150k without issues , others , well carry abox of matches.

I wanted one , did the research then ran away and bought a V70 D5.

My Vectra SRI 1.9CDTI has covered 150k and only had 2 EGV's, one set of glow plugs and a complete wiper assembly. The 1.9 is actually an Alfa JTD variant. They are not the most exciting of cars but they are very good at doing what they are designed for - which is covering long distances for company reps.
I' ve had 4 of them and they have been (by a long way) the cheapest cars I've run......not like another well known make that charges £260 for a tyre valve and got thru 5 of them in 3 years or £700 for a wiper motor.

I've got an Astra with the same engine, 80k miles had it since it had 30k. All I've had to do to it is one egr valve that I got for £80 and fitted myself. Needs a timing belt now but that's only £200 from the Vauxhall dealer. Been loads cheaper to run than the Octavia I had before that needed clutch, flywheel etc at £900 after only 30k miles. Make of this what you will

I've got one 🙂

I wouldn't go near the 1.9 diesel though. As mentioned above, DPF, intake manifold swirl flaps and fuel pumps are all common faults that are expensive to fix. Other common faults are the wiper mechanism which can be fixed with new rods of ebay for £30. Snapped springs on the last coil, but that's common with most cars, and rear tie-rod bushes can wear (but mine haven't in 4 years of owning it).

I got a V6Turbo petrol with every option, including AFL headlights, sunroof, satnav, hidden tow ball for the bike rack, etc for a bargin £6k four years ago with 60k miles. Its been incredibly reliable (touch wood) except for the wiper mechanism failed, which is basically a ball joint that wears and pops off.

Its thirsty, 27MPG average, but its got 280hp and goes in a straight line very quickly indeed. I wouldn't attempt any aggressive cornering with its size and turning circle but its not that kind of car.

The boot isn't estate size, but the back seats fold down in a fancy way that leaves the whole luggage space completely flat and plenty big enough to through a bike in without removing the wheels etc.

Only two proper rear seats, and an emergency seat in the middle for small people if your desperate. Rear leg room is biblical! They managed this by pushing the rear wheels right back, giving it a long wheel base without the Vectra estate length. Good for towing, but it results in a slighty larger turning circle that means "u" turns are impossible on all but the widest roads.

I'm very happy with mine, but if it wasn't for the VXR donkey under the hood, it would be a very practical yet mind numbingly boring car.

That said, my uncle borrowed mine and loved it so much he bought himself one, a 1.9 diesel, which hes had three years and hasn't missed a beat. Guess its luck of the draw.

bottom line, its a good size, comfortable motor with typically more extras than other cars for a damn sight less £ because its not cool or particularly well known. You cant go too wrong if you buy wisely

I had the 2.2 diesel version which was great when it was working but developed a fault that Vauxhall couldn't fix and would continuously go into limp home mode on the motorway.
I also found that there was a massive blind spot when reversing as its arse sticks out a lot longer than I thought, never seen my wife move so fast!
