Is it possible to replace the end of the damper assembly i.e. just the silver alloy bit that sticks out of the bottom of the lowers? The one on my vanillas is getting a bit ropey.

Yes. I borked the thread on my floats. Its a separate piece that unscrews from the damper assembly and is about £22 from mojo. Just tell them what year and model they are.

Thanks, that's the answer I wanted to hear!

Also, when removing the lowers, and hitting the bottom bit to release it from the lowers, should it be very hard to release? I hit it with the base nut and the 10mm socket still on (base nut partially unwound obv.) and did it hard enough to ruin the threads on both the silver bit and the base nut. And it's still not released.

Usually just needs a sharp tap to dislodge it(you haven't got lockout engaged, have you?), I usually remove the nut and use a drift on the threaded part to avoid a repeat of your scenario. When replacing the damaged part, you really should use a shaft clamp to avoid damaging the damper.

Keep hitting. I actually remove the nut if its not budging and hit the threaded end carefully with a proper hammer. Order two crush washers too as the old ones can be bar stewards to get to re tighten the nuts.

Cheers guys, will have another go tomorrow and get some bits ordered. Mojo best place for all that or will anyone else have the right parts in for less?
