We're off to Vancouver to see family for a few weeks in September. Does anyone have any experience: where's good, where's not so good etc? We'll be in the South of Vancouver Island.
Thanks
We went to Nanaimo, but found it slightly boring so headed back to Squamish on the mainland as there was more to do.
If you have a few days for a road trip, visit Tofino. Maybe 5hrs from Victoria, 3hrs from Nanaimo. Beautiful unspoilt beaches, surfing, walking, kayaking, whale tours etc. (There's a Bank Holiday in BC on Sep 7th so everywhere will be very busy, book accommodation in advance for this weekend.)
This is Meares Island, a short water-taxi from Tofino itself and an amazing 2hr walk through untouched rainforest:

Yeah, the towns don't offer much. Victoria is the capital, its probably the nicest to visit and has some sightseeing options, but its also full of too much tourist-tat for my taste.
Thanks for that. We're off to Tofino for the middle weekend I think. Great photos to be had by the looks of it. Any more opinions on where the 'good' riding might be??
cumberland ,nainmo are cool
Victoria is nice enough. If you get the ferry from Sydney you can visit Anacortes, WA (in the USA) and there's some nice stuff around there to sight see (drop me a line, my other half is from there). Try the San Juan islands for a day or two.
If you want to ride you can either get a ferry to the north shore and rent there or get the anacortes ferry and then drive up to Bellingham.
There's a lot of beautiful wilderness to go and immerse yourself in on Vancouver Island if you choose to explore. I'm off there for 3 weeks in August to visit my son. Tofino is definitely worth a visit, as is Cathedral Grove on the way to Tofino with its Giant Cedars. Campbell River, Cumberland, Comox and Courtenay are all worth a look round and you're on the doortstep of Strathcona Provincial park (2500 square kilometres of wild lakes, mountains and forests including Mount Washington bike park!). Not done much travelling in the South of the Island but I hear Victoria is pretty cosmopolitan too.
There is good riding around Cumberland, Courtenay and Mt. Washington way. I went riding with some locals from Simon's Cycles in Comox after buying a bike there and there post-work ride was an 'experience'. Friendly people too.
go to gold river if you want mind blowing stunts/trails
