I want to fit a new rack to my Vagabond - the old rack has a crack in a weld 🙁
Currently on 2.1 WTB Nano's, but they are going to become something 45-50mm and slicker.
I hope to fit Edge AL 56mm guards - anyone able to confirm they fit?
I also want a black rack, ideally as low and snug to the guards as possible. My old rack stood proud by a good few centimetres and was excessively wide. It would be nice to get bags closer to centre and everything snug.
Suggestions please, particularly if you have a large Genesis Vagabond...
Matt when not using soft luggage on the Vagabond I have used the Topeak Explorer 29er MTB rack with Disc (not sure the with disc option is strictly necessary as it spaces off a long way) on the rear and a Specialized Pizza Rack on the front. Carried 55kg of panniers and strapped on dry bags through Brittany to a friends DIY job with this set up.
I thought you had asked about tyres previously but couldn't find the thread. I am running 2.1 Thunderburt's I forgot just how good they were until I rode 90km on tuesday mixture of all surfaces including north downs green chalk - amazing rolling and traction.
budget for the rack?
I have a large vagabond but it’s the 725 iteration and I have a vague recollection that stays and forks were wider than on earlier versions? I have the 65mm bluemels
and they fit snugly but with plenty of tyre clearance. I adapted a trek 1120 rack for the rear but wasn’t particularly enamoured with it so bought and fitted a bontrager forward front pannier rack which is excellent. <br />

Oops. "Don't be silly" on price - so £50-60 maybe tops? A lighter, simpler rack appeals - some seem to have multiple bars and flat bits 'because' rather than good engineering.
Another morning question - SKS Edge AL '27.5-28' = will fit a 700c on 50mm or so tyres I think? Halfrauds have them much cheapness...
Tyres - I am umming and ahhing. I have been very used to my Continental Top Contact touring tyres, they have been fast on road and surprisingly grippy and very robust off road. But now I have some more space, do I embrace more gravelly or stick with chunky touring tyres? Options are something like Schwalbe All-Motion Evo in 47mm, G-One Allrounds in 50mm or Continental Terra Speed in 50mm (but come up a touch smaller). Currently I am 90% road, but plan on more gravel & offroad with this thing.
I am fairly fixed on the SKS Edge AL's after a few reviews on here - I would have Bontrager after having a set on Mrs_OAB's Marin but they don't make a wide enough set...

I *think* (99% sure) those are the Edge AL56 - no idea why Halfords have them named like that. I don't think SKS do a specific model for smaller wheelsize:
My Edge AL56s are currently covering Schwalbe G-One Ultra Bite 700x50 with decently chunky tread, no issues. My 'summer' tyres size up slightly bigger but less chunky tread and again fit no issues.
Good timing on that price as a sticked caused my rear guard to fold under itself this morning. First time in over 4 years and a LOT of offroad miles that's happened.
I use this with my Edge Als. It bolts to the mudguards so is very low slung. It's not the stiffest solution but I've done short tours (2 days, up to 250 miles) with them and do at least one long (35 mile) off road training ride commute on with them loaded with a change of clothes and laptop every week. If you're not planning week long tours where you're carrying everything you own it works nicely. If you need something more, the Velo Orange Constructeur would be my choice but they're over £100.

A potentially neater solution that may also be cheaper than buying new guards and a rack is the Hebie Alumee. You're limited to 8kg per side but if I were doing it again, this is what I'd get. You'd need the 62mm to clear 50mm tyres.

@munrobiker - cheers Luke, that was the kind of thing I had in mind. I don't think I want things too integrated though, so the second set is not for me - plus I would find it too easy to whack on more than 8kg one day.....
@a11y - thank you, that is useful.
I'll tell you on Monday when the set I just ordered from Halfords is due - £31 delivered, bargain. Thanks for the link Matt.
New rear guard needed after this morning's stick incident. My own fault as I'd cable-tied the rear stay to the guard after breaking the wee U-stay clip on a recent incident - I know now that bit's sacrificial to prevent what happened this morning from happening... This was after unfolding and bending it back into shape the best I could to finish the ride:

I ordered a set too - £31 for them delivered 🙂
I can sort a rack later - but very few of the racks give dimensions, and so when trying to get it looking neat and snug like munrobiker has is tough...
i have been using the much wider BLUEMELS STYLE 28″ 75 SET and been excellent, image the narrower AL56 would be at the very least as good.
I my setup I have the rear guard part mounted to the rack and it is rock solid, as for a rack I 'm using a new style OMM - super strong, but over budget and is wide...
Might be worth looking at:
