I am guessing whether one can get a utility bike on a train will be down to the mood of the guard....any experiences?

Unlikely to be space in the "bike zone". A standard 26" Inbred is too long for the parking bay on a Sprinter... Some trains have the bike hanger hooks in the roof, but I guess yours won't fit on them either.
If the train's quiet you might be OK - we had 5 bikes on a single Sprinter carriage up to Matlock recently, and that's only got space for 2 officially.
Our trains (or the ones I've used recently) have a pretty long space for bikes, I think it would fit without actually impinging on any other space, but you know what guards are like!
we had my cargo bike, my mates mtb with a tagalong thing, and 4x other bikes on one of those [s]bus[/s] train thingies from exmouth to exeter a month ago. Guard was a very nice man..

Yup, some mini-hitlers may try to assert tandem-rules on you. Not all services allow tandems. Occassionally mentioned on their websites, phoning customer disservices is the other option, though bear in mind they're programmed to automatically say 'no'.
