Is it possible to stick a PAYG sim in a smart phone, turn off mobile data etc and just use it to run Strava?
If so do you need to keep any credit on the phone or not?
The reason I ask is I'm upgrading my phone and going to give my current one to my little lad to start his Strava'ing
Yup, that'll work. Depending on the phone you might not even need the Sim.
I'll give it a go with one of those free ones you can pick up then.

Assisted GPS needs data connection to get a faster fix but the GPS will fix without, it'll just take longer.
I have an accident-damaged 5S for exactly this purpose

Don't even need a sim, I have a spare old iPhone 4s I use for GPS/mapping when out exploring, GPS works without a sim, cached map tiles, away you go...
