Now, I suffer from a sore/stiff back on long road rides and with the change to a Salsa Vaya for on/off riding is this a worthwhile addition or just another pointless bike invention that will fall into obscurity? In practical terms the idea seems a good one or will the combination of a steel frame/carbon seat and 650b x 47 tyres be sufficient to give me the comfort I would like?

Used a USE suspension post very briefly back in the mid-1990’s. The action did indeed give relief from some back soreness - but it did mess with my pedalling a little. This was a pretty short travel beast, certainly no more than 50mm - if that.
Although I’ve not tried a modern post - as it’s telescopic, I think the bio-mechanical impact is likely similar.
I wouldn’t ride a hard tail without one and that includes my Fatty.
A million times better than a ti or carbon post.
edit.. decades of full sus riding has given me a very sloppy pedal action when riding a hard tail, I bob all over the place. Sus seatpost smooths me right out.
@zippykona does the vertical movement interfere with your pedalling or is it more subtle at smoothing out the bumps/uneven surface?
It’s odd as if your seat is 5mm too low you notice it but from day one I’ve never noticed the change in seat-pedal distance.

Not sure I’d like to trust two small lengths of thin carbon to hold my weight over rough ground 😀
I have tried carbon and ti posts and none offer the comort of a suspension one.
Think I’ll take your advice zippykona, I’ll give the new carbon seatpost a try and if still suffering with my back I’ll try the Vybe
I’ve used USE suspension posts for 15 years plus on my hard tails. I’m very fussy about seat height on my other bikes but don’t notice the changes when riding. They really save my back on longer rides.
