[#1684262]

I've got a Trek 6300 (2009) and i'm trying to decide whether to buy a new bike or to upgrade things like the shocks and drive train but i'm not sure how upgradable it'll be in the long run. I've been looking at things like the 456, Orange Crush and blue pigs.
I tend to ride trail centres (llandegla, delamere and Gisburn mainly) not much proper out into the wild stuff though i do plan to do some later in the year.

Decide whats wrong or how you want to change. Wheels n tyres is always a good place to start. What forks? probably the next thing then drive train & finishing kit.

As Dusty says, I reckon - do you want a new bike, or are there specific areas you want to improve? Either's fine, obviously! 🙂
Brakes, wheels, forks are a good starting point, drivetrain you can upgrade as it comes to the end of its life, and so on. Plus, if you do upgrade the current frame you could swap them over to a new frame if you decide to go for one.

I was making the same decision a couple of months back with a similar bike.

I upgraded a few basics but realised, I wanted a full sus, and my style of riding had changed so need something a little different.

Also, i think deep down I fancied a change.

as nicko74 said, you can always transfer stuff to your new frame.

Thanks for the replies, it's not so much that i want you to talk me in to buying a new bike as i like my old bike i'd just like it a bit tougher and lighter. It's more about break even points. As some said wheels and fork upgrade, going off what people have said for wheels in the past hope hubs etc i'm looking at £250-300 and then forks which i haven't a clue about (currently RS Dart 3) is another £300-400ish. So we're at £700 roughley already thats not far off getting a new bike. I know upgrading is cheaper in the short term but would it be enough to keep me going or will i be spending another £700 in 6 months, in which case i might as well buy a new bike now, if you see what i mean.

Get a set of wheels and forks from the Classifieds here, no need for a new frame if you like your Trek.

Decent new wheels make a great difference, 200-250, loads of decent forks to be had, loads better than what you have for the same price again and you can swap to a 20mm axle at the same time, no real need to spend quite the figures your quoting.

The rest of the drvitrain and stuff just by nicer kit whens its knackered.

Beware, at this point you will have lots of spare bits and the urge to build a 2nd bike for a different type of riding will be unbearable, and this will go on and on until you have no space left.

Upgraded my Stumpy over the years to a pretty high spec - not only does it mean it has the "latest" kit on it, it's also cost me less.

At the moment, new bikes are very pricey. With the likes of Merlin and CRC, bikes parts are pretty cheap. As long as the frame is sound, upgrade away!

Thanks for the advice i'll stick with my Trek then. Looks like i'll need to create a thread asking which forks to turn a fat idiot into a mountain biking god
