Chain reaction are doing crossmax XL 29er wheels for £300. I'm very happy with mine.

Ohhhhh noooooo, anything but factory built Mavics.
Unless they've seriously gone full circle on quality control and design.

I'd be considering a set of Hopes on Stans Archs if I were you or DT hubs on Stans Archs.

I'd go for a set of factory DT Swiss wheels , depending on your budget 1501 xm for example. My experience of Stans Arch rims isn't great so I'd avoid those.

Conversely my experience of Mavic Crossmax ST 29 are that the two sets I have have been exemplary- straight as the day I bought them, still on the original bearings one set three years old, the other nearly four.

I also recommend you jump all over the crossmax ST's at £300. The reason for the sale is the new ones are wider. If you are happy with 2.2 rubber and less - go for it. Mine have been ace and cost a whole lot more two years ago, however stealth edit - where are they on CRC at that price??

£300 for the crossmaxes is a deal. I don't like factory wheelsets, wheels get beaten up on and you're tied to bloody expensive parts usually, but if you absolutely must get factory wheels then Mavic are the only ones you should ever buy imo... And sometimes they do race support too which could be a plus for you.

Personally I'd buy some cheap used wheels with DT240S hubs in just for the hub, the rims and spokes of your choice, and get it built by someone you trust. Super reliable hubs, easy replacability, and totally tailored.

I have set of Hope Pro 4's on the Hope XC rim going, as new and they're in the lovely Orange, let me know if you are interested.
