I've taken my 42-21 up Witchy Knowe on the Gordon Arms time trial you know.

I've also had a top 12 finish in a 72 mile 3/4 cat race.

So "ner".

LOL winterfold - no need for a 53 or 39 in UK. FATC.

and any cat 1 racer on a compact would kick you into the gutter on any of the above.

I think mine is a compact, I've not looked, I'd rather ride it than talk about it

MrSmith that's hardly the point is it?

That's be like me saying I'm better than someone who is slower than me with a compact chainset wouldn't it?

CoCkEtDoG - you clearly do like talking about it a little!!!!!

Having taken a road bike to he alps a couple of years ago I can say that unless you are a pro riding with a bottom gear of 39-25 is too hard.

Just because you can ride something on 42-21 doesn't make it a good idea.
(Just look at SSers...)

Not only do I have a compact on my carbon fibre road bike, I've even got an 11-28 cassette on it (and was seriously considering switching the rear mech to Apex so I could fit an 11:32!).

Yes it is - 42-52 is fine for racing - even here in Scotland.

okay grandad...suppose you still run a straight five on the back. Even when I raced in B&W I put a 39 on for hilly days.

Thats an average gradient of 9%, are you sure!!!!!!!

That's what the gumph says, it's the Harp Hilly

In TBC earlier today shootin' teh breaze with Downie, I noticed a bike with Ultegra...and a COMPACT chainset!

WTF!!!

Isn't this stuff meant to be reserved for noobs - Tiagra and below? It was bad enough when they released triples in Dura Ace. This stuff is meant for FAST people on FAST bikes. WHY?

Must try harder.

" I died a thousand deaths at Flanders"

I plan to again for the 11th time. Full route again.
I've found a std chainset fine with a 39/26 for the hills. Only downside is if the hills are crowded it's sometimes hard to keep upright if you have to slow down to avoid any bodies. A compact might give you more options.

I too was extremely sceptical when I saw that claim - even the legendary Tour of the (Surrey) Hills is nowhere near that.

So I checked the website - 4300ft ๐Ÿ™„ .

I blame the parents. I just bet this is one of those people who overtakes people on road bikes while they are on a 40lb downhill monster or a ghey urban fixy.

cynic-al - I meant your 42 inner ring is redundant too - doubles are poofs what cant handle their drugs
