[#11668537]

Trying to work out the full landed price on a set of wheels from Germany.

Using a calculator site I have a code of

HS 8714.99.1000

This seems to be a 0 rate ?

Can anybody confirm

Many thanks.

Unless it’s changed since brexit, there was no duty when I bought some from the wheel project in July.

Are the wheels built in Germany? Either hubs or rims manufactured in EU or a country with an economic partnership arrangement as regards rules of origin for bike parts? What price are the wheels? There is no simple blanket answer I’m afraid.

DT Swiss complete wheelset, I believe these are built in Germany. Component manufacture wise unsure.

Wheelset cost £1300 ex VAT

DT Swiss top end wheel set should be just UK VAT (20%) and handling fee (~£10) to pay on delivery, as long as they get all their paperwork correct. Much of the manufacturing and assembly is in France/Germany/Poland IIRC. Rim extrusion in Germany, made into hoops and then built into wheels in Poland?

Ties in with what i read that the (in this case) XRC 1200 wheels are built in Germany.

I think it will need import duty applied too. Not sure how much it is for bike wheels.

No duty from EU

But you will pay UK 20% VAT and a processing fee

Wait until they update their online shops so you are not charged local VAT but instead charged UK VAT which they will pay direct to HMRC. Will make it effectively the same price.

May be a month or two until shops get their websites in order.

They be (Almost certainly) consigned as Polish and so you should only need to pay the VAT. That of course is totally dependent on the process of the shop. If they dont fill in the paperwork right you're paying 4.7% extra

DT are a Swiss company, where the extrusions are made, or the wheels built, doesn't really matter if they then pass out of the SM and into Switzerland.

Thanks all.

Bike Discount list the wheels in GBP ex vat and on a test basket, process got all the way to pressing confirm price remained constant. So it seems they will ship and the VAT fees etc will be collected here.

They won’t. Germany and France both have distribution and support centres taking stock from Poland and Taiwan IIRC… they won’t even enter Switzerland on the way to German shops.

Yes they will not be charging local vat - but the UK price will remain the EU price including vat so they have simpler systems and make more money from UK customers to make up for the increased hassle - thats my bet and already seen by some.

Might have changed what bulky is, earlier this week they had a comment that they couldn't ship anything over 60cm.

Did you buy from Germany in the end? It seemed zero duty to me so took the plunge and ordered a set from Wheelproject. Despatched a week ago, but got no tracking details, so expecting the courier to be in contact to pay the VAT and handling fee. Still should work out several £100s cheaper than buying here, and that’s if parts were available.
