Just watching Women's championship from Novi Sad, Serbia on Europsort (highlights).
Is it me or is this just a total nothing of a course?

Just you, it was technical (step sections, dark tunnels and stupidly steep down ramps) and hard work with plenty of elevation per lap (140m in 4km I think), it's just a different type of challenge.

But where were the drops, the roots,the rocks? Aren't these usually a component in these races...like in the Olympics?

It was urban based, so there were cobbles, step sections, tunnels etc. Granted the course was different, but it will have been designed and sanctioned by the UEC and the UCI for the champs.
