Hi all, my boardman mtb has mountain king II tyres but I was slipping on roots and gravel a lot at the weekend, can you recommend good alternatives - i prefer grip to speed.
Prefer not more thwb £30 each.
Thanks

Don't think wheel size is relevant!

Try Magic Mary or Maxxis Shorty, High Roller2 or Minion in a softish compound.

I just went to Butcher/Purgatory from Minion/Ardent and am liking it so far. The Butcher is a bit better than the old Minion and the Purgatory is a bit 'different' to the Ardent (possibly better overall).

For one thing, I'd go used, lots of good condition 26er tyres out there now with people [s]upgrading [/s] changing wheelsize.

Hard to say what you need though, if they're OE spec mountain kings there's a fair chance they're absolutely terrible... So you could get a massive upgrade easily. But if they're quality mountain kings, they're actually alright.

You'll never go too far wrong with a pair of highroller 2.35s tbh. Supertacky or 3C on the front, 60a (maxxpro) on the back. Never the best, never the worst, just sensible allrounders that'll do a bit of anything.

Big fan of a chunky monkey on the front, dual compound trail extreme for £15

and a Smorgasbord on the back, again dual compound trail extreme for £15

Not the lightest but very grippy.

Ooh look there's some reasonably priced, lightly used 26in tyres on the classifieds right now.
