[#6377248]

I had a Specialised Clutch SX blow off a rear Flow rim in the Alps this summer. An off-camber landing from 8-10" (yeah ", not '). Nothing major. The Stan's solution in it foamed massively on explosive decompression leaving the entire area (and me) "foamed".

I assumed the foaming was due to the washing-up liquid I used to help seat the tyre. I fitted a tube, and that night put a tube in the front as well, worrying about a similar front blow-off.

Last night - literally while riding along - the rear blew off again. This time a Chunky Monkey running tubeless fitted yesterday afternoon. Again lots of foam and colateral splatterage. The Chunky Monkey has been run tubeless on the same rim for a year at least with no issues.

Is the common factor the washing-up liquid? I know neither tyre is Tubeless or Tubeless Ready, but I'm having nightmares about it happening on the front/at speed etc.

The washing up liquid shouldn't affect it. TR tyres generally have stronger less stretchy beads (tyres do stretch over time) to prevent blow-offs. Maybe time to spend some money.

I think the bead is actually "loose" inside the moulding on the CM. I was cleaning off the dried-on latex and the tyre was "bunching up" on the bead, like fabric on a draw-string. A wee pull on the bead sorted it, but I'd never noticed it before.

**long winded anecdote**

One day, having been for a ride, the rear tyre blew off my Podium MMX rim, several hours after finishing the ride - it had just sat in the hall.

"Gosh,", I thought, once I'd regained my hearing, and retrieved miss njee20 from the ceiling, "how strange". I fitted a different tyre, which also exploded. A third was gingerly inflated, and seemed fine. Some months later I changed tyres, two more exploded. Considering each tyre was ruined after the explosion it was proving expensive, there was no visible damage to the rim, but I replaced it in the end, it was cheaper than tyres, and obviously then it was fine. All the exploding tyres were Schwalbe Evos, a pair of non-TLR, and a pair of TLR ones.

Doesn't really help, I can only assume I'd somehow damaged the rim, just not visibly, and it no longer retained tyres. I never got around to checking if they were failing at the same point.

Flow? Not flow ex? Are you using a rimstrip and keeping the pressures sensible?

I ejected a tyre by not using a rimstrip on a flow and running over pressure on a flow ex, no trouble with other setups.

I managed to blow a Butcher SX off a Flow Ex at the weekend but the rim's quite flatspotted so I'm just blaming it on that. Aaron Gwin style rim-riding heroics did not occur, I nearly shat myself.

But never had it with a good condition rim and tyre.

Flow, not EX, and just using the yellow tape.

I have standard Flow rims, not EX. I've recently switched from Specialized Purgatory's to Maxxis HRII's and the sidewalls seem much more rigid on the Maxxis (both TR version). I burped the Purgs frequently when pressure was fairly low (2o-25ish psi, 13st on hartail). Not yet burped the HRII's.

Had a deafening experience seating the fatty's tyres a few weeks ago. Got the tyre seated but it was a bit wobbly on the rim so took it up to all of 40psi to see if it would even it out.

Thermodynamically, I suppose you could describe it as having a great deal of enthalpy, as I and the dog discovered when it slipped off the rim. KABOOM! doesn't really cover it - there's a lot of volume in a fat bike tyre. I've now got latex covered grass and paving, and a slightly scared wary dog.

I had a very old high roller LUST blow off a LB carbon rim the other day, the bead had snapped at the joint, within the rubber. Putting it down to it being a one off and assuming the bead snapped first causing the blow off but a bit wary now!

Had the same happen yesterday with a maxxis ardent 2.4 on a spank oozy rim. Was standing right beside it when it blew and pretty sure I was still half deaf a few hours later. Tyre had been used previously so I'm assuming the bead has stretched slightly. Spent most of last night cleaning the sealant mess from the every corner of the shed!

Sounds like I should count myslef lucky that I can't even get my tubeless set-up in the first place.

I have had a non tubeless minion de-bead twice now. That tyre had run for months on my last set of flows with not even a burp!
First time was on a normal turn it burped as I turned and as I tried to slow down it came clean off the rim. I got it home cleaned off and refitted with fresh sealer. Came off a small jump at speed into a slightly off camber landing and it went bang and blew right off the wheel dumping me very hard into the scenery!
Having previously run tubeless with no problems I can only really assume its the tyre. So guess will try some of the new TR maxis offerings. ( when I can get back out riding) 🙁

After a bit of a google search it looks like the bead lock design of the EX rim has got a larger hook section. Wonder if that's causing my problems as new rims ar flows not flow EX
Scroll down on that page for a cut away pic

You know it can happen with tubes, too? Not to mention that they have other exciting failure methods.

I don't doubt it. I'm just looking for a crumb of comfort after my initial set-up woes. Once my thumbs heal rest assured I'll give it another go.

I had a maxxis advantage exception that kept blowing itself off a standard flow (lucky thing) after I burped it.

It blew off whilst it was stood in the kitchen and I'm still amazed now at how much coverage is possible with 3oz of stans sealant. Looking back I should have taken a picture but at the time I think I was in shock as I'd had the bastard thing up to my ear a few moments before listening for leaks.

Heard the bang and walked into the kitchen to find the tyre 6 feet away from the wheel. Always make sure the wheel is on the bike now before I take it up to pressure.

One word ....TUBES !....been there done that ,do
I've put tubes back in cos I'm sick of all the fannying about trying to get them to seat ,stay up etc etc ..

I've got stans on 2 bikes and some new Hopes on another, and even decided to tube them ..

I thought I'd broken my hand first time I did it (an old slack panaracer, back when panaracers really weren't tubeless compatible, off an 819). Couldn't move the fingers normally for days. But then, people get killed by car tyres letting go sometimes so I suppose it's no wonder bike tyres can sting a bit

I got tagged by a compressor valve off one of those battery jump start/compressor jobbies a few years back.

Blowing a 10" tyre up on a site welder, rocked the welder side to side to check it was going up when the plastic rim exploded. The valve caught me on the back if my thumb. It was numb for months afterwards, a part of the rim must have skimmed my face as I had a cut about half an inch from the corner of my eye to the top of my ear.

Dangerous stuff!

In response then, I propose the following argument: Specialized tyres are shite.

manufactured isn't the same as designed.

The Butcher was designed by Maxxis, just that they call it the Minion. Then it was skillfully copied by Specialized and ever so slightly improved.
