[Closed] Tyre Seating on Stans Crest

[#2323607]

I'm using stans crests with tubes (on hopes SP-XC3) and i'm finding getting the tyres to seat on the rims needs lots of pressure.

This isn't such a problem at home with a track pump, but is more of an issue if i get a puncture when i'm out riding as it takes ages with cO2 or a mini pump to get to 50+psi to seat them.

Am i doing something wrong?

Get some UST tyres.

What tyres are you using?

I've got Olympic and Arch rims which are similar to Crest and when a tyre has seated once it's always easier the next time. CO2 should have the thing seated in a flash.

Is the rim strip shifting into the bead hook?

I suspect that it's the tyre. Stans has a list of a few brands they don't recommend on their website.

How are you repairing the puncture? I use the Weldtite sticky string kit; you don't have to unseat the tyre to repair as it's all done from the tread side - if any worse than can be repaired using that method then I'll fit a tube.

I'm using a mix of schwalbe - rocket rons, nobby nics or racing ralphs in 2.1 flavour, using schwalbe rim tape not stans tape/rim strip with schwalbe XXlight tubes.

The Co2 cartridge only seems to supply me with about 30-40psi which isn't enough to seat the tyre properly, so i then need a pump anyway or have to man handle the tyre to get it to seat!

Why don't you pump the tyre to 20 or 30 and then use the CO2?

Seems a strange one - I mainly use Schwalbe tyres on my ZTR rims and they work great. The Nobby Nics are slightly tricky to seat tubeless first time on but once they've been fitted once always go up fine after that.

My money is on the rim tape fouling the bead hook

my schwable nobby nic combo works fautlessly. Have you tried a thinner rim strip if its particularly thick?

The schwalbe rim strip is really thin, and really lightweight, I will take the tyre off and check it out though maybe worth running yellow tape even when using a tube just to keep it away from the bead hooks

Although I'm not using tubes, my new crests are touted as having second generation 'bead socket technology'.

What this translates to IME, when compared with flows, is a firmer grip on the tyre bead, and a concordant increase in pressure required to get the to seat when inflating - I've seen it with tubeless too.

I must admit that fitting Nobby Nics to my Crests back in the spring I had to use a compressor to get them on.

Hmmm I just got a set of Crests and struggled to get my Continental Speed Kings on. I had no problem getting them seated just Big problems getting the tyres on especially the last bit over the top of the rim, managed to get 2 pinch punctures which totally peeved me after finally getting them mounted and trying to inflate them only to find I'd punctured the tube. Hope I never puncture during a race with them otherwise I'll be out 🙁

Can I ask why you would buy crest or flow rims and not utilise their main feature of running tubeless?

For me they were nice and light, on offer and I don't do tubeless as apparently the slime/goo or whatever needs changing every so often and also settles if not used and i work away half of the year on 4 or 6 week rotations so would end up having to clean out and pay for new goo every other time I'm home. Also I very rarely puncture out on the trail, once in the last year so I don't think tubeless is worth the effort for me.
Strangely enough I got my wheels from Merlin built up with Hope hubs and didn't receive the Stans rim strips but just a few roles of the Hope cloth instead.

You don't get the tubeless tape as standard - it's extra.
