Hi all

Only just found the site while googling for some help so I'm a new user looking for advice. I'm expat in France in the middle of nowhere so can't easily get the problem looked at in a bike shop (hard to find a decent one as it is).

Stupidly, I've avoided doing any maintenance on my mountain bike and have been riding with a buckled wheel for a bit. I've had fattish tyres on and the tyre has rubbed a groove in the frame. The frame is 7005-T6 if that means anything. I've included a link to a photo showing the damage: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/N6VMNfdc-fLNBN_jKRPcOTvT4XCVrRobvmJ9K-DerAE?feat=directlink

I know its impossible to say for sure, but is this likely to be a serious problem ? Is it possible that the frame is seriously weakened from the tyre rubbing against it ? Should I scrap it ? Can I get it repaired ? Or am I probably worrying about nothing ?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Nope, my Blur was fine after 'fitting' some 2.5" DH tyres:

I had this on Kona Dawg once, used the bike for a further two years and had no problems. Mate has the bike now and it's still fine.

I wouldn't worry about it

have something similar on my whyte from dropouts being misaligned (prev. owner). hard to judge without knowing depth and tube thickness. been riding mine like that for a year no probs. i'd not worry too much because a failure there isn't likely to kill you ๐Ÿ™‚

Carry on riding and keep an eye on it. There's no sharp stress riser there.

I borrowed a friends bike and put wide tyres on, not only did it wear the paint down it put a hole in the frame, unbeknownst to me, about 10mm wide. i continued to ride it xc hard after i noticed it and it was fine. He now has the bike back and got a friend to fill the hole in with a weld patch (steel frame). Hes been running it for the past 6 months fine.

**note to self, never lend dabble anything**

Keep an eye on it, but it'll probably be absolutely fine.

Thanks for all of the rapid responses - I feel all happy and reassured now, and will just keep an eye on it after each ride. And thanks to whoever pointed out that a failure there probably won't lead to a fatality - I hadn't been thinking like that, but yeah, as its on the rear, at least I shouldn't be going over the handlebars ๐Ÿ˜€

I've had it too, on two different frames. One a DH full suss the other a hardtail used for DH. Both were fine for years.
