[#7020369]

Was given a Maxxis Minion Supertacky in excellent condition plus a Minion in 60a compound (less good tread) earlier - both dual ply. A mate had them gathering dust in his shed.............for the last 8 years. Not inspected them properly but wondered if the compound could 'go off' over such a long time.....usable yey or ney?

I watched a documentary about trek bikes in the tour. They had a stock of tyres that had been stored in a boiler room for around 5 years which were given to the riders as they offered the best performance.

Not exactly super tackys but interesting all the same.

If they've been kept out of the light I'd take a punt. I suspect the super tacky is more likely to have "gone off" over time.
I've got a set of irc mud mads dh from 2000 that livein the shed and are no worse than they originally were.

They will have degraded for sure through exposure to oxygen in the air. Rubber is attacked by oxygen, ozone and UV light with the effect of making the rubber less flexible. They will be far from brand new. Probably rideable but not as good as new ones.

Keep an eye on the sidewalls. Had an old set of high rollers that I fitted and after one ride they were all cracked.

Degraded yes, but it doesn't mean they won't work - just that the rubber might start to crack a bit. Won't do you any harm. Eventually you might lose bits of rubber off the tread but even then it doesn't really matter. The casing itself should be fine.
