Any views on what the minumum clearance should be between tyre and fork for mud-clog free riding?
Have just splurged on a fatter tyre and am trying to work out whether I'd be better leaving it in the packaging and swapping it at the LBS rather than giving it a shot.
(Specialised Purgatory 2.3 into Rockshox Recon 100s, BTW. The Recon is rated for 2.4 nominally, apparently, although looking at it, I'm not convinced!)
Depends on so much - mostly what sort of mud you're talking about. Although 2.3s wouldn't be my first choice for riding in copious amounts of mud.
I'm hoping not to ride in copious amounts of mud too often.
But the odd stretch of filthy pasture might be pretty much inevitable around here at the moment.
It's more about what people think is a sensible compromise - I've just shoved a Captain 2.2 onto it, and am getting about 5mm clearance.
Don't Spesh have some tyre satisfaction guarantee thing where if you don't get on with the tyre you can replace it with another from their range?
Cheers, Stiggy, apparently they do. Just spoke to the LBS - there's one on a bike there which they kindly ran the rule over, and it seems they are the same size as the Captains, so I'll probably give it a shot.

Is it definately a 2.3 that they compared? Purg switched from 2.2 to 2.3 recently.
If it doens't work out, I might take it off you ๐
It fits...same size as the 2.2 Captain.
also depends on the rim width
