When plotting a route on bikehike or similar is it possible to get a notification on screen to turn left/right at the next section?
Basically for a route I'm not to sure on, would like other than following the bread crumb line to have it say where to go next?
I know it has no maps etc but can't see why it wouldn't do it if you've plotted it prior on bikehike etc
Any ideas?
Well how would it know to turn down a road if the road is not on the units base map? You need a routable map installed before this will work. I'm not familiar with the 510,can you install routable maps?
You can't install maps per se on the 510 but you can set up course markers when you load in a breadcrumb trail to beep and warn you a turn is coming up.
I think there are full instructions on the DC Rainmaker site (www.dcrainmaker.com) although it might be for the Forerunner 305 but works exactly the same.
Otherwise Google setting course markers edge 500 / 510 and you should find what you are looking for.
It doesn't need a map, you create the route on a website using course points, I'm just not sure if the course points actually show up when following the breadcrumb line? As in is it just one long route with start to finish points only? Or does it give you markings of every time you clicked the mouse when plotting the route? I,e course points?
Maps are irrelevant as it's not a road ride (well it has some roads in it )

This is exactly what I'm after? How do you do this Danny?

Ah, so it's like the old Etrex H GPS where you add waypoints and it knows where it is relative to those. Some may be turns, some may be waypoints (in the classic 'stuff you go past' sense) but it doesn't really know where it is relative to real 'stuff'.
Waypoints are a very good way of looking at them. Nice thing is (AFAIAW) you can custom label them so they do not necessarily have to equate to a navigation instruction but a warning about an upcoming trail feature or a reminder to take on some fluid or to eat something.
As for navigation you label it a left turn or a right turn or whatever so yes it is a pretty 'dumb' system made smarter.
Quite often .GPX tracks done by others include some markers.

Thanks just done a tcx and it's worked ...... Only thing I can see on my edge is in the listing for the turns it seems to either say turn left or go west? Is there a way to just get it to turn left rather than head west/east?
But at least it's worked anyways! Thanks
Aye, that's just like the Etrex I have. If you've any sense, you set the route up in Memory Map or similar then follow the line and any instructions you've created on screen. You can set up a route in the unit but it's a ball ache.
I don't nav like this on the hills (Etrex is my Hill GPS, I use an Edge on the boiks) I just get the odd grid ref if I need it and nav by map and compass.
Convert your GPX file to TCX on Bikeroutetoaster and all will be well. TCX files allow turn by turn way points even though there is no map underneath. Import as a GPX and export as a TCX.
Just realised why it says turn left /right on some points and turn west/east/south of others......fairly obvious really guess it's when I'm on the road sections and it can easily say turn left or right but when I go off road it will say head sout/west etc as the contours aren't as clear as road junctions etc at different angles rather than as simple as left or right
Anyways done it on bikehike and downloaded it directly to the garmin as a tcx and it has got a full listing of turns/heading directions with even time to go and distance to next turn, which will be very handy!
Used to have a edge 800 which guided me on tonnes of new routes perfectly, but the OS 1:50 maps helped with that as it was clear to see bridle ways etc....maybe I'll get anew edge1000 at some point to have the maps again once they have come down in price or even a edge810 if can get one cheap enough , not quite as easy just following the line with no map IMO, but this will defo help having the guidance and such like
Cheers again danny
Hmmmmm well it was easy enough to follow the line, but the turn by turn thing didn't work
I started and finished the route in the same place so I'm wondering if that caused the issue? Instead if distance to next turn etc at the top it basically all the way around said head to end point?
Did it confuse the garmin cos the start and finish was in the same place?
My Etrex does that. I create a 'start' point and a separate 'end' point (even if they are in the same place) and nav from one to the other. Stops the unit getting confused.
I use ridewithgps and create a tcx file for my 500. The only issue I have is that the cue sheet always has roundabouts as straight on so I manually change those.
Once I've created the route download it and put it in the new files directory on the Garmin. The info it gives, which can't be changed is the breadcrumb trail, an arrow highlighting the next turn and how far it is.
Works pretty well.
Monkfish - it did give me all the cues in a listing before using the tcx route so I know they were there, it had them listed in order with distance to next and where to turn/head and would have stated each one on the map at the top but all the way around it didn't and just told me to head to the finish point
However it didn't work cos I think it thought I was at the end at the start if that makes sense, I perhaps should have started and ended the breadcrumb line in different places so the unit could differentiate between me starting and already thinking I'm just about to finish the ride before I've even started
That's what I was alluding to. Hence the separate start and end points.
sorry boblo i somehow missed your post above mine ๐ณ
yep seems like that will cure it then, pretty annoying really, but luckily i did know most of the route and the line itself to be fair was easy to follow
the only issue id have with just following the line is, for example yesterday i came to a cross road that i go on part of the loop and come back at the same cross road but a different section, had i not studied and plotted the route before i wouldnt have had a clue which line to take at the cross road as they crossed over paths, would have been pot luck which i chose had i not known it beforehand
