Hi folks,
I have an Avalanche GT 3.0 MTB with knobblys on which I am going to replace with road tyres (been advised to get kevlar reinforced ones?) so I can use it on a turbo trainer for a couple of hours each day throughout winter. I don't particularly want to change my bike if I can help it.

I know nothing about turbo trainers or if they will even benefit my fitness so after a few pointers. I was recommended a Cycleops Fluid 2 I think it is called as a good trainer but was wondering if there are any other ones I should be looking at.

Any advice appreciated on the tyre change, the trainer itself and if it will improve my fitness!

tyre - get a proper turbo specific one there is no need to change the front as it sits on the ground and does not move.
Another wheel makes sense if you also ride the bike in the real world
It will improve your fitness if you can cope with the boredom

as ever, it depends on your budget. if you have 50's burning a hole in your pocket then go for it. i have a dirt cheap magnetic single resistance job which has been fine for what i needed; namely having to get in an hour here and there of intensive training because i don't have time for a proper ride. no matter how much you spend it is the most boring thing you will ever do, expect it and live with it.

i use a road bike with standard road tyres, it's a good use for seconf hand tyres that have passed their best with wear or cuts, it doesn't take ling until they are shiny though so either get turbo specific tyres or write off whatever you use on it.

best advice i can give is a computer attached to the rear wheel so you get essential info and use the plans on this site to get the most from it.
