I'm thinking of 'investing' in a turbo trainer for when it's just to grim at night to ride the road bike. My wife also fancies using it. The only slight problem is I'm on 11 speed, she's on 10, so we can't just get a spare back wheel and share it on the turbo, but I can get a couple of cheapp back wheels so it;s not a deal breaker.

Any good/bad things I need to look out for or avoid. Are the direct drive one's any better?

Not used a direct drive so can't comment on that.

It's worth getting turbo specific tyres - they are a harder compound than that used in road tyres. Can't remember what make I have but there's a warning on the side: "DO NOT USE ON ROAD!", I got one with a red sidewall so there is less chance of using that wheel outside. Since you don't need to use your brakes when on a turbo you can use an old rear wheel that has reached the rim wear limit (providing it's not too worn of course)
