Recently got some Sun Ringle Black Flag experts (Stans No Tubes) from CRC, ran them with tubes for a couple of weeks but now I've got a tubeless NN and a decent track pump thought I'd give the tubeless a try...
First of all the TL NN was stupidly tight to fit on the rim, but thought if its tight then it should be air-tight no problems... Carried on and pumped it up to 40psi without the sealant to make sure everything looked ok - not quite sealing so I rubbed the rim and tyre with soapy water and it seemed to fit better, however it now appears that the air is leaking out of all the spokes... There isn;t any sealant in yet but will the sealant stop the leaks around the spokes?
The yellow tape is fine so is this normal?
Cheers!
Doesn't sound right that.
if it's leaking from the nipples(!) then the yellow tape isn't on right.
What clubber said
Well, managed to get the NN off and checked the tape - it looks fine - no tears etc - anyway, I've just stuck the old normal NN back on with an inner tube... Just call me old fashioned!
You'll probably find that having stuck an inner tube in, if you inflate it pretty high and leave it for a couple of days, it will probably stick the yellow tape down better so it actually seals the rim like it's supposed to.
Try again in a couple of days, then whack some sealant in. Tubeless is worth it...
I had that with Arch rims, which have little holes drilled in the inner surface. Although they were taped there wasn't enough overlap and air and jizz leaked out me nips.
As mboy says.
Micro leaks around spoke nipples is normal surely and exactly why sealant is needed. I often get leaks around the valve as well that soon bung up with sealant. Use plenty, it doesn't weigh much and its sealant that deals with all the thorns that will no longer be bothering you once you are tubeless.
Hmm well I had been running with tubes for a few weeks... Will see how I get on - not really prone to flats around here except for snakebites..
Might give it another goin a few weeks just to see if the sealant does seal the leaks around the nipples..
air shouldn't get past the tape or valve, if it does sealant will not seal the nipples.
Re-install both, tightly.
I have sealant coming out of my valves but I don't see it as an issue my tyres inflate well and stay inflated, no problems putting air in, wouldn't worry and I don't use tape.
Yeah but sealant should stop air getting past the tape and it certainly can stop air getting past the valve . You need to use sealant .
If the tape seems stuck down ok and covering all the holes then it is leaking from the valve. Make sure it is seated properly and try tightening it up a bit more. Sealant should sort that out if its not too bad anyway.
Is it an asymmetric rim?
