I go with internal width + 5mm.

Personally think its best to go up the sides to prevent movement when seating/ removing tyres.

For instance, my 45mm (internal) WTBs use 50mm tape. This is what WTB recommend for their rims.

DT do 42 mm tape designed especially for 40 mm internals.

Thanks, I have a CRC voucher, so I guess wtb 45mm is the way to go? I take it the tape isn't thick enough to cause bead seating issues on a tubeless ready rim? As the rim edges do appear quite shallow

One issue with tape is that when you are levering tight tyres on, the tyre can dislodge the tape as it falls in to the well. This might be more likely if you go for narrower tape on a wide rim.

I find cutting down wide Gorilla Tape isn't too much of a faff and means I can get exactly the width I want.

Surely you want the tape to cover the raised ledge that the bead sits on to provide a better seal. Otherwise you would have high pressure air trying to get under the edge of the tape, not to mention sealant trying to get at the glue on the tape.
