Are the rim strips e.g. stans actually necessary for converting a standard rim to run tubeless?

You can make your own from bmx inner tubes.

It would seem cheaper, but surely there must be more to them than that for £16

No, I just use a loop of gaffa ape with a couple of inches either side of the valve hole overlap and go over with electrical tape. It's worked countless times for me.

The "Ghetto" approach is the most cost effective IMO; Gaffa tape and BMX inner tubes have worked a treat for me up to now.

I presume anyone buying a pair of Stans strips has "MUG" tattooed across their Forehead.

It's always worked for me, I use the super-lightweight Maxxis ones for my 'best' wheels!
If the tyre is a bit loose, I put a layer of double-sided foam tape under the rimstrip.
