No, that’s it really. Sometimes when you’re fitting a new tyre it helps if you leave it turned inside-out for a day or two beforehand or else fit it with a tube and leave it somewhere warm overnight. It helps it lose the creases from where they’re folded when they’re packed.
I usually lube the bead with some soapy water too.

I’ve used 24” but 26” would probably do the job too
Cool. I'll experiment with the inner tube method then.
Good thread this 😀
Cool ok. Maybe I'll just stick both the new tyres on with a normal inner tube tonight and go for a ride with that setup tomorrow so the tyres are the correct shape.
Then have another go at setting them up tubeless on Sunday.
Getting even pressure into the tyre so that it seats properly is key. You want to ensure that you can get air into the tyre faster than it can leak out, thus pushing the bead into the rim walls. There are a number of things that you could try:
A brand new folding tyre will often be misshapen, so you'll need to let it stand for a while (the tip about leaving the tyre inside out overnight is a good one, BTW).
Soapy water applied to the tyre bead and rim bed may well help the tyre evenly inflate.
You could try wrapping the inside of the rim with layers of electrical tape, with additional layers applied to the centre of the rim.
So with the tape are you trying to create channels against the rim that the tyre pushes into and can't easily pop back out of?
You're trying to make the tyre a tight fit on the rim, even before it's been inflated and the bead pushed out to the rim wall.
If the tyre fits on the rim loosely/too easily then chances are that air will escape faster than you put it in, and the tyre will never inflate and push the tyre bead inyo place on the rim.
Usually once the tyre is inflated and given a few satisfactory "pings" as the bead seats there shouldn't be too many problems.
Had another look tonight and at the moment there isn't any hint of a channel down each side for the bead to sit into, even with the bmx tube in there.
Also, the tyres are definitely a bit misshapen at the moment which isn't helping. I've inflated them both to 30 psi with an inner tube in and going to let them shape themselves properly. May even try riding trhemnlike hat and see how the grip compares to the Maxxis dhf / dhr2 650b are at 25 psi (tubeless) on my main bike.
In the meantime I'll try to pick up some thick tape I can run down thto middle of the rim - it's 21MM internal diameter so assume I need something around 15mm wide ish.
