I've been asked to take the slight wobble out of a workmates mountain bike rear wheel and my question is: Do I have to remove the tyre and tube completely or can I just let all the air out?
It's only a slight wobble. I'd just ride it as it is but he's new to cycling and he appears to be really worried about it. He was going to Decathlon later to have them fit a new wheel!
PS: I'm new to truing wheels.

Do a search on youtube on how to true a wheel. No need to remove the tyre or tube or let the air out.

Yeah, as feed says. If you let the air out and it really isn't too buckled, you'll have a job telling what's rim wobble and what's tyre deformation.

For a very slight wobble just don't go too heavy with the amount of nipple turn as can quickly make it worse than it was to start with.

There are literally HUNDREDS of wheel truing videos on youtube...
This fella is worth a watch. His pace is similar to wheel building. I followed his full build video for my first builds and they've been superb.
I'd remove the tyre, but if they say you don't need to...

Leave the air in, if it is a rear wheel you can mimic a truing stand with a ziptie on the seatstay:

Thank you.
I can't get on to YouTube because of the work firewall and there is very poor mobile reception here so I can't even see it on my phone.
I'll do my best

I was quite surprised that my local shop trued my wheel for £7.50. Might be worth it if you are "having a go". There is opportunity for embarrassment if you haven't done it before.

I'd allowing the tube to deflate a bit, but not necessary to remove. Looking at my bikes, plenty of the tyres have internal wobbles that isn't a result ion rim being out of true.

Get the hang of truing the nipple direction - if it's at the bottom of the wheel (as it were) - it can mess your head which way you're turning it and which way it will go.

Use a score of chalk to mark out the nipple coverage (oooer) you expect.

Good luck monksie!

That video is good, but having just started watching it and skipping through it I do not have the patience!

One of my wheels is currently at my local shop, to pick up tomorrow - and I won't have thrown it across the garage 🙂

you can true it without taking the tyre off or deflating, I never do. but if you are wanting to properly check the roundness of the wheel it's probably a good idea, akward to properly check that with the tyre on. side to side is easy.

As mentioned cable tie on the frame will do. I use blue tack and tooth pick, not having a truing stand myself.

Other consideration apart from truness is the dish of the wheel, I just use a pair of calipers for that and measure it from parallel bit of the frame.

Go ahead though, actually getting a wheel to true and move where you want it too, is surprisingly easy, I just learned not all that long ago, it's not that difficult a learning curve. (after watching a few vids and a bit of trial and error.)

Reminds me I need to go an true my back wheel, walloped that out over the last few weeks.

That video is good,

That video would make you want to give up life, never mind truing wheels. 😆

Here's a better yin, more involved than just truing. But infinitely more interesting and engaging!

Have to say, yes, i would take off the tyre/tube/rotor/cassette, lateral truing can affect radial true, so being able to spin the wheel and see that can help decide whether you tighten one spoke, or slacken the spokes each side of it

I often confused myself turning nipples during my first attempts. Things get confusing very quickly if you're mixed up about whether you're tightening or loosening.
