After ~2years of use, my rear hylex brake seems to have packed up, Originally I thought it just needed bleeding, although I've been informed by my LBS that the master cylinder is leaking. I'm a broke student and can't afford to spend £120 on a new system. Has anyone had any luck repairing anything similar, or are there any other options I should consider?
Personally, if I had a bleed kit I'd take it to bits to see if I could get to the bottom of what the problem is. Once upon a time it presumably didn't leak, so perhaps a seal has degraded?
If you don't have a bleed kit, you're probably talking £20+ for that, and thereafter replacement parts, plus the elapsed time involved for all that. So if you don't have all the gear I would be tempted to skip all that and buy a new rear hylex. I got a front and rear brand new for £180-190 around a year ago AFAICR (that seemed like a fairly awesome offer TBF). I need my bike to get to work and that sort of money for me is fairly negligible for something so critical.
