fancied doing the Nan Bield pass descent, and was wondering what its like to climb from troutbeck up Mardale Ill Bell (?part of high street?) then descend down to the summit of Nan Bield (marked as a footpath on the map so might have to do some walking down with the bike if theres loads of walkers), then the Nan Bield Descent.
Was thinking of this route as it avoids the hike-a-bike up from Haweswater, but wondered what the climb up from troutbeck would be like ? rideable?
Just man up and do the hike-a-bike.:P
This is on my list to do soon, but I have heard the Gatescarth descent is good too, so I'm just gonna do it that way I reckon.
I think the climb up gatesgarth pass then up across harter fell is much more rideable. Shouldn't be too bad a ride if you start and finish in Staveley and go over green quarter to longsleddale.
grumm - yeah but i live right near the troutbeck side so could make a nice short-ish loop if its doable this way
smuttie - ah ok, i'll just man up like grumm says and do the long Garburn / gatesgarth / nan bield monster then!
It's a push/carry up the steep grassy slope, then nice riding along that (fairly quiet) footpath. A good loop, as you finish over Garburn.
