How many have upgraded to the point where a new frame would be a whole new bike?
My Giant Xtc4.5 has only the drive system (apart from chain), brakes (will be going soon) and seatpost (going sooner*) left from original.
From a riding viewpoint it's already a completely different bike!
* Anyone got a Thompson layback 30.9 going spare?
My Hemlock frame.
New front triangle
New shock
New rocker plates
New swing arm
Only the stays left.
I know a guy who has only the front triangle of his Marin Riftzone left, and that's been resprayed.
My Thors are the Ship of Theseus* of forks. New lowers and recently new stanchions, all replaced on warranty.
*like trigger's broom, only with a classics degree
Haven't bought a complete new bike since my first "proper" mountain bike. They just evolve. I think there's still a rim in use that was on that original frame at some point (although it wasn't the original rim there!).
with my old klein (now on ebay if anyone's interested, had to plug that) I replaced EVERYTHING over time aside from the frame!
Thompson, Crossmax, Fox, XTR where it matters, XT where it doesn't! It's around 20ish (just over) lb. but I can't ride it because my back hurts following some surgery so I have to sell it ๐ as it is quite a harsh responsive ride which I used to love soooooo much. Now I got a more comfy bike!
picture of the klein i built up:
I've a fillet brazed frame & the only original parts are the right hand seat & chainstays!
