Trek ABP Dropout Question

[#12456827]

Bear with me here, I’ll probably not explain my question very well…

Trek Slash 7 with the rear dropout made up of the parts shown here…

Part number 583419, on the top right, looks like this on the other side…

The young fella has had his back wheel out, for some reason, and was having trouble putting it back in, so as usual dad has to sort it out. Now, on the drive side the end of the hub sits neatly in the inside of the dropout, which is this…

but on the non-drive side it doesn’t - there doesn’t seem to be anything “cradling” the hub end cap, it needs the thru axle in place for it to stay in the right position.

Is this right or is there something amiss here? On every other axle bike I’ve had the hub end caps sit snug in the dropouts on both sides. Such that - with the bike upside down - you could spin the rear wheel and it would run smoothly. Here, the non-drive side hub end cap does not sit snugly, because the part as shown above doesn’t cradle it in the same way.

Anyone with an ABP dropout on their Trek that can tell me if ours is as it should be or not?

Are you missing the big nut that holds it in place? It can also sometimes be a bit tricky aligning the dropout but unless there's anything damaged it should slide into place.

The big nut is there, and there’s no problem getting the wheel in, it’s just that it’s wobbly until the thru axle is in. Looks like that’s how it should be from that exploded view 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hi.

I've just taken a look at my 2020 Slash 8.

On the non drive side, the hub sits on a lip formed directly into the frame (on the seat stay).

Drive side fits into the drop out you've shown in your third picture.

So the rear wheel does support itself without the axle inserted and does spin freely.

Hope that helps

As above, the hub is cradled in the seatstay itself, but it's a loose fit in there, definitely not snug or held in exactly the right position.

on the carbons, it's a long way from snug too. I checked this with Trek and it was classed as being 'normal'

Since then, i've ignored it 🙂

Yeah, so OK, it isnt snug on the ali Slash 8 either - there's plenty of play at the back until the axle is tightened.

Great, thanks, I’ll assume it’s fine then!
