If it's external as above then it's definitely the same as Shimano. I must be on about my 8th bb in 4 years on my Truvativ setup lol!
EDIT : that's 3 years actually

yes, but the groves are at different intervals on each side

Edit: it's the hole in the middle thats not big enough for my BB tool

That sounds strange. Are you 100% sure that the grooves aren't equal? I don't disbelive you, it's just that I have the latest version of the SRAM cups fitted to one of my bikes, and they definitely are the same each side, as were the older ones (as mentioned, I've been through quite a few). I fitted them myself with a £10 tool.

Just seen your edit - the tool grips around the outside of the shell, not the inner! There are "teeth" that locate into the indentations on the outer edge (see pic)

sorry, they are equal. it's because the holes are different diameters on each side, the tool doesn't go all the way in on one side

Top Dog - both sides are different because of the way that the Truvativ system fits the axle. For running a Truvativ crank in a non Truvativ BB (like a Hope, for example) you need adaptors to fit on the inside of one side. Have a look at the Park Tool website - it'll walk you through it, but as above - it's a Shimano HTII tool that you need - and read the etchings on the BB as to which way they turn, they're different each side.

Here you go - all your questions answered: clicky

And here's your tool:

http://www.parktool.com/product/bottom-bracket-tool-bbt-9

does that help? There is no plastic preload thingy on the Sram, otherwise installation of the cups should be the same.
