Transpennine trail Barnsley to Dunford Bridge - safe to cycle or dodgy groups to be avoided?

hi all

cycle touring in a few weeks and thinking of the TPT stretch through Barnsley to Dunford bridge. However have heard some say it’s not particularly safe. Safe to ride or best avoid?
