I'm mulling over this one. I'd rather get a train out to Hull and be riding back towards home. Anyone done it this way round? Any advice, suggestions, thoughts etc etc gratefully received, as always.
I'd be bikepacking on a gravel bike and wild camping if that's relevant
Have you ridden it before? I've done the Western half Southport to Barnsley way, and quite like it overall but it's very twisty with a lot of restrictor gates in the urban and surburban areas. It's like the opposite of ticking the miles over on the open road or trail - you'd need to account for this in your planning as it's not a fast route.
Also passes through some proper rough areas - e.g. the inner sanctum of Scouse Scally-dom. Still, it's interesting for all that and you do get to see a lot of history that the nice roads would generally keep you away from.
The plague of restrictor gates has eased up in recent years, as well, with plenty taken out in the Western section - used to be so many stop-start sections it wasn't much fun.
Hi. No, I’ve not ridden any of it before. I have heard about the gates.Â
i have ridden the east section from Hull back to Barnsley. also ridden the middle section from Barnsley up to Leeds. and also ridden the west section as far as Woodhead.
the east section is very quiet, and very nice because it keeps you away from roads mostly.
i like it.........bikes,no cars....... awesome

wanr some company for some of it?
Hi Ton. Thanks for that. Much appreciated. I'll try to keep you posted when and if it happens. Many logistics to work out!
I’ve ridden all of it east of Dunford Bridge in both directions. Only done westward to Stockport, from Doncaster.

Hull to the coast and back is an old rail trail, pleasant either way. Hull to Selby is a nice mix of lanes and small roads, a few paths. Again, pleasant either way, but fairly exposed to the wrong winds. Selby to Doncaster is a bit fiddly getting from one canal towpath to another, while avoiding A19, A614, A63 etc, but it makes for nice enough riding just a bit circuitous routing. Doncaster westbound as far as Dunford Bridge is mostly old rail trails with a few diversions where bridges and tunnels don’t work, decent surfaces these days, used to be a slopfest in bad weather, now improved. Up the road from Dunford bridge is a big pull, and then the drop down to Longdendale is rough surface and gates, which eases up once you get down to the old tunnel area and join the rail trail again.

Wild camping near Doncaster I’d be looking at Owston Wood or near the old Earth Centre (now Kingswood) near Conisbrough.Â
