I have signed up for team relay half iron man next june in Devon (this years was yesterday iirc) and not really done much road biking need to sort some training out.
The distance i think is 66miles or so, and i need to do it in under 4 hours (ideally around 3.5hrs)
In theory it sounds relatively easy - am i fooling myself? Done 66 mtb miles in 8 hours before so distance should be ok, time is another issue though!!
Any training tips/ideas/plans etc?
Oh and i have a road bike but it has flat bars/bar ends!!
Speed may be an issue so practice doing the 18 mph average you need till you get to that distance then work on the stamina to maintain it for 66 miles. depends how hilly the course is how hard the 3.5 hours is tbh for a solo rider
You have a hybrid then ๐
Get some drops or aero bars, get some long easy miles in during winter, of about 70 miles at a steady pace. Ramp up the speed and drop the miles a bit in the spring, then start pushing hard for 60-70 miles over a similar course at the start of summer to give you an idea of how to pace yourself.
realman - yup or road 29er as i like to call it ๐
Tri bars will help you to keep aero.
One word of advice..
Ride whatever the weather. If you're committed to a ride, go out, even if it's chucking it down.
Should be fairly straight forward to get the speed for that ride. Just means getting the distance, then working on the speed.
just cycle twice as fast as you did on the mountain bike. easy.
road 29er? that's a whole new niche !!!
you may be best having a look on some triathlon forums because you'll need to blend swim and running training as well as bike stuff.... main thing is to get used to pacing yourself and keeping the cadence up
It's a relay - he's only doing the bike leg.
Aero position will help plenty, drops at the least, tri bars/base bar will be cheaper and more effective, assuming you're flexible enough and don't mind making your bike a bit more 'triathlony'.
Is it actually a hybrid you're starting with, or a flat barred road bike? If the former then I'd start again to be honest.
