[#10828725]

So in a couple of weeks i am driving from Newcastle to Perth, looking for a stop somewhere for a few hours mountainbiking. Ideally not to much of a detour from the A1, A68 or A697 but open to suggestions.

Normally i just drive onto to Glentress or Innerleithen but thought maybe there was somewhere north England worth considering.

Is Kielder worth a visit?

Thanks

I've not ridden at Kielder for a few years. If GT, Inners & golfie are your usual haunt then Kielder might be a disappintment, it might be great.

There is of course T******n, but I'm not up to date on how contentious the access is and whether the landowners are upset again. Nothing is signposted so you'd need to do your research or blag a guide.

Kidland is no-no, the landowners don't want people riding there outside of the sanctioned events.

FWIW I'd try exporing elsewhere within the Tweed Valley of you think you've done it all. Yair can be more mellow, Thornielee more steep.

Also, Pentlands?

Kielder is ok for a few hours but not comparable to the tweed valley in its scope or variety. There is some decent riding to be had in Northumberland but it's not a case of following the signposts so it depends what you're after.

The riding in Northumberland on legal trails is great but generally not overly technical in the main. There are some very good get away from it all loops though including one from Ingram.

Thrunton woods is good for an afternoon and 5 minutes from the A697. Fire road pedal ups, blast back down but does require a willingness to explore or a local guide..................or maybe strava/trailforks?

Echo the above re: Kielder. It's also out of the way as the roads around there aren't the fastest.

GT/Innerliethen would be good in terms of efficient quality as you can just rock up and ride until you run out of time with littel planning.

I'd have a look at Jedburgh. There is the "Justice Trail" if you google. Also years ago there was an event - The Jeddart Justice - or something. I rode the route a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. XC stuff, enhanced natural trails.

Guisborough and N York Moors?

Unless there's been some major tectonic movements recently I'm pretty sure those are still not between Newcastle & Perth 🙂

Bolts Law (as featured in Issue 122)? Edmundbyers isn't far off the A68.
