I find myself in the position of doing a bit of trail gardening. Any recommendations for folding saws, loppers and / or little axes?

Got a folding saw from tesco. Very light, big teeth, keep in rucksack. Does the job.

As above but from Aldi or Lidl
Folding shovel from ex army store or market stall.
Garden shears for gorse, braken, brambles etc
Secatuers(sp?) for smaal stuff

Best tool is a machete type tool. Fiskars make a really good one. You can cut through brambles, nettles, thick branches brilliant!
