I realised today that I'm not sure what to call out when passing others. Is there a standard call? Should I just push on through and not say anything?
"on your right/left" is open to mis interpretation as in who's moving to the left/right.
"passing on your right/left" seems a bit long winded.
"Excuse me my good man/woman, I was wondering if....." Ain't going to happen.
I am more used to the short and succint "paso"
I have no kind of benchmark as I've not heard anyone requesting to pass me, mainly as no-one has passed me! 😕

What do others say when passing you?
Or does that never happen?

Usual practice is to sit roughly an inch of their back wheel and make sure you have got your loudest set of pro2's clicking away like mad.

Haha, is that a challenge? I promise you'll come off worse when I t bone you off at the first corner! 😉

Seriously though, you mainly ride degla don't you? Not surprised you never get passed, everyone I've ever seen there is slower than the shifting of the continental plates! Just shout "on your right" and pass on the right when it's convenient enough to get past without too much trouble...

At trail centres I only ever really pass strangers on climbs or the fire roads so just chat with them as I pass, on descents I wait for a big gap before I set off to get a clean run but if I do catch them I'll pull over until they've given me a big enough gap to go again (or sometimes I'll push back up for a full run again). it's not a race 😆

'To your right/left' depending on where they are positioned - get passed plenty uphill, but never DH yet with the exception of Fort Bill Black

Just use a little ping bell only £3 or less. Polite and only occasionally freaks people out like this bloke down the marina earlier. 😆 His GF thought it was funny, and the dog looked at him in disgust.

Don; come over to Llandudno with us lot, innit?

Sign up to MBNW and find out about rides all over t'shop.

Luckily so far here most people I've caught up with have noticed I've been behind them and pulled over for me 🙂 If not so far the etiquette seems to have been "passing on your left/right", or some guys just shout "rider!" which seems a bit rude 😆

Just recently, I've been going with "mind if I play through when you get the chance?" Then drop back a bit until that chance arises. Or if it's a sweet bit that I know well, I'll open as much gap as I can before setting off. If you do pass someone, make it count. Don't sit two feet in front of them, make sure you disappear. Trail centres don't do much in the way of passing places. I'm had to so "no rush" or "only when you can" to people who looked like they were trying too hard to let me through.
I've also explained to my other half that she only stops or moves over when it's safe for her. Don't try to kill yourself for the benefit of a total stranger trying to rip past.

If it's a kid, you slow right down and let them choose when you should pass.

If it's somebody slow you shout "on your left of right" but only if it's not going to cause them any problems.

If it's somebody you know, you say nothing and pass like it's the final of the 4X complete with running commentary.

But i'm might just start using...

"elite rider passing on the right, sugartits!"
😆

Don't forget that when it's wet, as the faster (Read BETTER, more ELITE) rider, it is your duty to put the bike into a drift through a puddle therefore showering the slower person with a sense of muddy fail which drenches them. They soon get the message and then take up chess instead.

What's the correct etiquette if you're riding round a trail centre the opposite way to everyone else and you keep meeting people head on ?
Pass on the left as if it was a normal road ?

My king hubs make a nice squeal that people hear well before I get onto there tail.
I've found people just let me through and I've never had to ask people.

having the most fun ever passing folk at the mo. went with my kids to a canal towpath opening and got a cracking big silver bell FREE.. couple of tinkles on that and everybody pulls straight over thinking your some young kid or grandma until you glide past.. literally jaws have dropped.. apparently according to the nice lady that fastned the bell to my bike two tinkles is etiquette.

Although to be fair, he says that to everyone he passes.

True, true! 😛

Normally if there's another rider behind me they don't need to say anything, as I have a habit of flinging myself off the trail I hear something that even remotely sounds like another rider approaching. This can actually be incredibly inconvienient, as these sounds can include distant trees creaking in the wind, and the confusing "Crickets or Hope hubs?" condundrum.

Canal paths and bells are another thread I think. I was wallking down the canal path in Chester yesterday when cyclist Nº1 came charing head on at me and clearly wasn't going to slow down, leaving me to jump out og his way. T**t!
Cyclist Nº2 came up behind me tingling away, and I thought it was someone on a barge doing something that bargey people do, and I didn't move out of the way. Sorry! 😳

A not dissimilar thing happened to me and the Mrs doing the HONC a few years back. We were pootling down one of the wide, sunken stony descents and a chap passed by whizzing up the side and then launching off to land a few feet in front of me before belting away. I was quite impressed!

That video is mental

Heh! And at BigBikeBash recently, a bloke behind me (on a cyclocross bike ffs) was extremely polite in asking me if I could let him pass when it was safe and convenient for me to do so. During a race. 😀

Whereas at Mayhem, some ****s just ride past you with no warning, giving you no room and causing danger for both of youse. No need for it. Even during a race, it's important to show consideration for others.

A bell helps in races, too. 🙂

I tend to sit on back wheel humming the tune to Airwolf as loud as possible - that often helps! if you can also get a mate to make helicopter noises then that's good too. . . . seems to unsettle folk.

Shout "rider" from a mile off, if they haven't stopped and got out your way, skid hard behind them with a more polite "excuse me".

I ride at degla quite often , problem I have peeps come up on my right and say something, but I'm deaf on my right side so don't really hear them, then they come past pissed off and give me abuse, I need a sign saying pass on my left, never really understand the need to come past at all costs, and i'm never going that slow, although i ride an orange 5 and they attract people to pass you 😀
I did have one guy kick off because i was blocking the trail he didn't notice the young lad splattered on the trail we had stopped to pickup when it was politely pointed out to him he still insisted we should keep the trail clear, at that point he was told to move on not so nicely.

It's not a question of "at all costs", having a train of riders sitting behind the slowest on the trail isn't realistic, is it? So people have to be passed.

although i ride an orange 5

I think I might have seen you there.

I did have one guy kick off because i was blocking the trail

Don't leave your bike in the middle of trail just round a blind corner while chatting to your mates, as I found one day on the 'freeerid section at Cwmcarn, the owner responce was 'how was I supposed to know a bike was going to be coming down there?' 😕 👿
