Ok, now I'm on flats and have put a couple of afternoons in I can balance on a slight uphill for 1-2 minutes. How on earth do you do it without the incline?
Do you use the front brake and bounce back off the fork? Or is it the back brake and something completely different?
I seem to creep forward very slowly as I weight my front foot, if I brake I feel stuck and tend to keel over. Not good.
Alpin to the forum please.

Do you use the front brake
Yep, push back / rock back. It's harder than up a slight incline but not that much worse when you get a hang of it, then you can try doing it down a slight incline.:)
Then you can master the tracksit.
the rocking/movement reduces with a brake [ so you balance more] but basically the same thing but less.
Cheers, lots of info on that other thread too.

On the flat, you can lock the brakes, or look for slight undulations in the ground to push your front wheel against. then you can use the lightest of pressure on the cranks to push against these minute bumps. you can always hop the front wheel around to regain control of your balance. Reading about it on a forum will not get you much further unless this is backed up with lots of practice. Its a very useful skill to have.
