Morning all,
I'm after a pair of touring wheels with disc hubs but don't know where to start. Weight is not important, and I could build myself if need be, budget is about £150 but I'd like to keep it as low as I can, they just have to be strong and take a suitable touring tyre. I could also go higher if it was incredible value for money.
So if anyone has any recommendations for rims/hubs/spokes/tyres etc I'd be pleased to hear them.
Cheers
Matt

Deore XT hubs, Sapim spokes and Mavic A317 rims. Plenty of other stuff available but that lot is good value for money. Wanting to save a little more money you could go to deore hubs - I've got a pair that are lasting very well in similar wheels.

What frame is it? Assuming it's got disc tabs it should accept 135mm mtb hubs but worth checking. Also, I made an assumption this is for a 700c touring/road/cyclocross bike not touring on an mtb.

SJS cycles or spacycles are good places to start for this sort of build.

Cheers both.
The frame is a Kona Sutra so it is 700C. I'll check out SJS/Spa/ Big Al's and see what they've got.
My thoughts were to use deore hubs as they'd be cheap and easy to get hold of.
Regards sapim spokes - as I'm not interested in weight I guess plain gauge will do? Can also I ask why the A317's? (this is only because I'm trying to understand the difference between the different rims available).

spokes - plenty of debate on this one but there is a school of thought that butted are not only lighter but stronger - not everyone agrees. Sapim also do a "strong" spoke which is plain gauge and thicker that some builders like to put on the drive side of the rear wheel. Spa cycles will sell you exactly however many you need at a good price.

A317 - is a disc specific (no brake surface and quite stiff for it's weight as the profile is optimised for strength rather than having a braking surface shape) 700c touring rim that can be had for under £30. That's on a short list of 1 that does that job I think. No brainer I'd say for what you want.

My Sutra came with Deore/A317s. I'm running XT/Open Pros on its replacement.

You don't need to use disc specific rims, I built a set of XT's with Sapim spokes on DT Swiss TK 7.1's for my Vaya, not the cheapest option, but the rims were on clearance at the time, quite like the look of the braking surface as it's shiny and unused.

Cheers all,
Sounds like slx/xt plus A317's are the way to go.
Druidh - how does the upgraded wheels compare to the old deore + 317's?
