Sitting bored after watching Crankwoks on freecaster and wondering how much money the likes of Peaty , Minaar and Gee make a year. Obviously they probably earn a fair bit from Sponsorship etc but are they better paid than the big names in Road cycling.

They will earn as much as the lowest paid riders in the pro tour road circuit i'd guess.

Not mega bucks. no point they won't create much of a return.

Interesting read about how much money is in the Tour:

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-07-22/tour-de-france-family-owners-top-favorite-alberto-contador-in-money-race.html

...and this sounds about for the DH boys (and girls):

It was rumored Steve Peat signed onto the Syndicate team for $1.3M for 3 years, but I dont know if that's true. Most pro downhillers such as gracia, HIll, Athertons, don't make that much. They get free bikes of course but annual salary is around $20,000 with tons of sponsors. It varies and depends on how good youre doing at races, how much money youre getting from wins, how many sponsors are endorsing you, etc. But for the most part, even if you are Sam HIll, you better have wealthy parents or a second job. I.E: Gracia could only afford his villa because he does real estate on the side. Its ridiculously difficult to make a living being a pro downhiller.

big names in road cycling get a lot of money 1 million + a year just from their teams. not sure about DH riders but I doubt the big names get more than 100k a year from riding and sponsorship.

Contador earns “millions” of euros a year from Kazakhstan-backed Astana, Sanquer said, without being more specific. He gets a salary of 5 million euros, L’Equipe newspaper reported on July 20.

I doubt Peaty is on that!

Still a great lifestyle though , Italy one week Whistler the next . Think about the Freebies etc , Up at Fort Bill I got the gondola up with Harry Molloy (nice guy) and his Dad . I couldn't help thinking that It must cost a mint to travel round Europe with a bike mechanic etc etc.

There's a minimum wage in road racing though, the riders operate a system somewhere between a union and a cartel. Min wage for new domestiques is about £35000/yr although Team Leaders and big names (Cavendish, Armstrong, Contador etc) will be on substantially more.

Its not just a 'top 10' thing.

Think about it, Peaty could finish 30th one year, and national series races would still be filled with V10's. Just as 5 years back you couldn't move for 222/223's.

Peaty is a brand in his own right (even ignoring Royal Racing which is now more of a signiture collection with 661). He could sell bikes long after he's retired.

The Athertons are what you probably mean by top 10, commencal built their brand in the UK by association with them. No Athertons and it would be quite possible to imagine no Commencal in the UK.

I think you'd be surprised how much the bigger names are on. I remember reading a thing on Peaty when he went to GT, Palmer told him what he should be on and helped him get a good deal. That was years ago so he must be on a tidy sum now. His house certainly doesn't show a 20k wage.
Free bikes and lifestyle doesn't pay the bills!

doesn't peaty have a stake in royal racing? if he does he must earn big bucks off that

It's up north, you could get a farmhouse in the peaks for the price of a 2up2down darn'sarf!

He was on big money at GT, but that was back when downhill was on TV (as in real TV not the internet) which makes a huge difference to exposure, which is what brands need in return for their money.

There is a huge difference in wages, some guys in the top 10 will be getting half a million whilst others will be lucky to get 20 thousand.

Never understood why this subject is so hush hush.
Most people with a passing interest in football would be able to tell you how much the top players are on.
My only guess is that the Sponsors are paying a lot less than they used to and don't want us to know, as I ve not noticed any of their products getting any cheaper.

Would make a interesting story for the mag.

I got told from a reliable source (big uk/wc team manager at the time) that peaty was asking for £125k from potential teams after leaving GT back around 2001/2002ish. Apparantly that was only half what he was getting from GT before he left.

Russip , Why did Peaty leave GT and all that cash ?. Seems daft that he went to another team and dropped his pay as well.

Gt went bust, a friend of mine also worked for gt in the glory days, he's also on a lot less than he used to be on also.

I reckon riders are probably on a lot less than some people think. My guess the top boys would get a couple of hundred k but the drop off will be pretty steep.

Well great lifestyle humm... Yeap sure, if you don't mind not seeing your wife and kids for weeks. They probably don't even reach the salaries useless ****ers kicking a ball on a field gets. Even the one from 3 league.

Thing is Moda there's not 30/40 000 people paying £30 to see them race and BBC SKY etc paying millions to screen the race, like the do with the footy!
Footyers get paid what they are worth to a club, like it or not.

Moda, DH'ers arent exactly role models for kids, it's just that OK/Hello aren't interested when the biggest bit of action off Brendan Faircloughs back yard dirtjumps is when his mate "bangs a fat chick" on one :-p
