[#617351]

It's been almost one year to the day that I bought a mountain bike for the first time in about 10 years. I was 16 then, and it's when I stopped riding. Really really starting to enjoy it now, but I fear it may get pushed aside by other hobbies I have. I play a lot of football, but at 26, I'm not going to go anywhere but amateur league. I love the football, but, maybe it's time to brush it aside and start putting more into the mtb'ing? I also do a lot of photography, but I know I can combine that with getting out on the trails.

Anyone else over subscribed to hobbies and find it frustrating?

I struggle to find the time to go walking/climbing as well as biking - lots of stuff I would love to get into (photography, canoeing etc) but it's just another thing to find the time for and spend money on.

Winning a huge sum of money would help. That would give you the time to indulge in various hobbies and the money to buy all the kit you need.

Go and do that.

I do climbing, running, mountain biking, want to start kayaking, and maybe get a road bike. Also class reading and fiddling with computers a hobby.

No such thing as too many hobbies but the ones you enjoy most, or fit in with your life best will rise to the surface and the ones that don't fit in sink tot he bottom. Hence I hardly climb but run and bike loads. Its still a hobby though.

Don't find it fustrating, quite the opposite, different mates for different sports. Depends on what you want to get out of it.

I'm not sure what I want from cycling. I get huge enjoyment from it, more than I ever got from football. Only photography beats it for that fuzzy feeling.

Competing might be the way to go, but that will involve a fair bit of travelling for me, and competition seems pretty thin on the ground here in Northern Ireland for XC racing. I don't have a DH rig, can't do 'getting air', and i'm slow, so that rules that out ๐Ÿ˜‰

I MTB, road bike (more and more recently) and climb (indoors only) and run.

I used to play football all through my twenties, played 11 as side saturday and sunday but gave it up when I turned thirty, I was getting so many injuries it was stopping me doing all the above. Footies great for hanging out with mates, having pints after the match etc, but I thought the cons outweighted the Pros

Yeah, the social side of football always appeals. I'll see what this summer brings with the bike, might turn out I try to take on the world and stuff everything else! ๐Ÿ˜€

I did a road sportive on sunday, really enjoyed it - not sure if I can make time to get into road biking though.

BTW warton you are missing out if you only climb indoors! Much more satisfying outdoors imo (though weather dependent obviously).

The problem with spreading yourself too thin, is that I find hobbies are much more enjoyable if you do them regularly and really progress/get fitter etc.

My problem is not so much that I have too many hobbies, but that I have a wife and a job.

It's tricky to give more than one or two enough time to keep the relevant skills/fitness at a level to get the most out of them.

Years ago it was all about climbing and hillwalking for me, now it's pretty much all biking and the odd climbing trip isn't great because I haven't got the confidence anymore. Similarly if you're only going to get out on your bike once every few weeks I don't think you get as much out of it 'cos you're just not as fit and on the ball. So yes, I think you can have too many hobbies if you want to do any of them to a reasonable level.

EDIT: Wot Grumm said basically!

I'm out at least 3 times a week on the bike now, I could do it every night if I could, but I usually rest a few days.

I mtb, road bike, box, and play badminton (its something to do with b's..)

Only thing I find hard is finding time to go out with friends who dont do any of the above.

lol at bigdummy! a job, wife and kids = less time for hobbies, i do my best to get out on the mtb every couple of weeks, ride a roadie to work (40kms each day) and get a cheeky surf on sat or sun. I dont do too bad as far as hobbies go but am often in trouble!
