[#1398819]

I have bought some DT wheels which have been set up to use UST tyres (valve and rim tape etc). Now ive never used UST and and must admit i don't know even how to use UST tyres (feels ashamed ).

Now, do i buy some UST tyres and give it a go, or do i remove the UST gubbins and go back to the trusty tubes?

What benefits can i expect from going the tubeless route, and what are the pitfalls?

Cheers for your help

More grip due to the ability to run less pressure & a lot less puntures - I've had one in two years tubeless & won't be going back to tubes.
Pitfalls - none really, maybe a bit more money for tyres but thats worth the puncture resistance to me.

More grip (as you can run lower pressures) and no pinch flats, bit of sealant and no punctures from thorns etc either.
Can't think of any downsides apart from some people have difficulty getting tyres to bead etc but my 819's and ust tyres were a piece of cake to set up.

the only pitfall I can think of is changing tyres, which is more of an @rse than with tubes, especially if you're using liquid latex no-flats or similar

Other than that it's all good. I have DTSwiss 5.1s but I've ghettoed them rather than use rimstrips (although I have rimstrips for another bike and struggle to tell the difference tbh) I used normal (non UST) tyres so was forced to use latex in them, That said, 18 months and no punctures. One burp (on that Mcslab thing in scotland) but not bad enough that I couldn't ride on.

It's all good really, unless you're a serial tyre swapper.

I use exactly that set-up out here in the Alps, running with UST Maxxis High-Rollers (previously used it with non-UST Continentals as well). Flawless, I didn't have a single puncture in the whole of last season.

my experience with 5.1s tubeless is that UST tyres end up welded on under the bead. I had to cut a high roller off.
Oh and getting tyres on can be a real pain, basically the rims are too big, you need something like a stans flow with a smaller sidewall or a proper mavic UST rim ideally.

Other than that, main benefit of tubeless is no punctures, as stated.

I use UST, normal and tubeless-ready tyres, all tubeless with latex.

Normal ones are lightest, UST toughest and TLR inbetween.

Used on normal and UST rims.

a) If you get a lot of punctures, there's a reason to go for it.

b) If you get a lot of pinch-flats, there's another.

But, if you get neither, then a) is redundant, and if you don't get pinch-flats why not try reducing the pressure to get the supposed advantage of running lower pressure with tubeless. I'm running at 20psi at the moment with no bother.

AND, if you change tyres a lot(and I ride in Nottingham (V muddy) and the dark Peak (V rocky) so I do so frequently) then there's a real reason to stick with tubes.

Cheers,

A

Thanks for the info chaps.

I don't tend to get many punctures or pinch flats as i'm pretty light.

I also hate changing tyres and usually only vary between Trailrakers & Cinders depending on the season. I usually run my tyres at about 35 psi and have little problems with grip etc.

Am wondering if UST is going to be a bit pointless for my riding style!

Possibly, but then out today I mangled the second tyre in a week. Split straight thru on flint... Both Bonty TLR's, a Jones and a Mud X.

In the summer I ran UST around here, think I'll get some more.
