[Closed] to anodise or not - the great aesthetic debate

[#1914685]

I'm just about to build up a ti hardtail, and I'm presented with the old nugget of how to make it look.

I already have all black wheels (Hope hoops), dark grey brakes (Saint and SLX), grey stem (Sunline) so the obvious thing to do is carry on with this steathy/grey ensemble, which would counter the ti frame nicely.

...but... that's what a lot of ti bikes end up looking like, and you end up looking like that bloke with 7 Sevens and matching underwear. They look good but I do fancy something more.... well colourful, and personal, and interesting.

...but... then you're into anodising land, which could get messy, and tacky, and before you know it you're bolting on purple skewers and looking like Andre Agassi at his zenith.

so...maybe just a few subtle bits, like a Hope seat clamp in pewter and match stem top cap?

What do you reckon?

Where is the real beauty in this one....?

I agree it is a somewhat secondary, academic pursuit but I do love the way bikes look, as I'm sure you do too.

If I don't think about bikes I start thinking about sex, which is generally more problematic

Excellent guidelines here

examples:
Anodized Hubs - FAIL. A cycling aficionado has a great appreciation for fine hubs. Fine hubs come only in silver and black.

Anodized Seatpost - FAIL

Anodized Brakes - If they're the only anodized component on the bike, then PASS.

Anodized Skewers - PASS

Anodized Chain, Cassette or Chainrings - MASSIVE FAIL

Not yet. Currently ordering all the bits. Frame should be here by the end of August, hence the endless thought processes regarding how it will look.

For a Ti bike, Hope seat QR and Skewers in a subtle ano colour is probably enough (gun metal / silver / blue)

One with dirt on it so you have no idea if there's poncy accented components on it.

One that's been ridden long and hard, one that has dried sweat on the TT, one that is muddy, one that looks like it's been used for what it is - an MTB, not some fancy trinket.

HTH

There is no such thing as too much anodising, just more envious onlookers.

Do it how you like it don't worry what anyone else thinks. I haven't got anodised hubs but have in the past and done right look nice.

TSC those guidelines imo are just bullshit.

Less is more. With the colour scheme you're going for. a few well chosen mango bits will be ok. Say; Headset and seat clamp. NOTHING else.

Not blue, nor red...

It's great being colour blind. I have so many excuses for the large amounts of pink on my bikes ๐Ÿ˜€

I'd go blue if it were mine. Would look nice with raw Ti. Pro2's with matching floaters look nice. Thomson in black for stem & seatpost. Black headset & seatclamp. Maybe grey seat & grips. Black rims but nice shiny SS spokes.
Its your cash. And folk can say what they like but there's a bit of bike tart in all of us. ๐Ÿ™‚
