Took my housemate and his GF out for a bike ride today at their request. Only a gentle(ish) one down the FOD, didn't want to scare her.
Anyway, loaned her my HT with 1x10 setup on it (32T ring, 11-36 cassette) and she got on pretty well with it an enjoyed it a lot.
Best quote of the day though was when asked how she was getting on going up the hills, she replied...
"It's brilliant, this thing has got like a Bazillion gears, I could climb anything on it!"

Good point, well made! Nice to see an innocent, enjoyable and positive thread on here for a change ๐
I've built two hardtails for my wife & her sister. Built both 1x9. Too many levers & buttons would confuse them. ๐
It depends a lot on where you ride as well as your fitness. I would be walking a lot of my regular climbs without a twin ring - or I would be spinning out madly every downhill section. I need more than 300% gear range

Get back to the Christian thread-it's safer!
My wife could never get along with the 24 gears on her commuter MTB so ended up staying in the middle ring all the time.Less choice, less confusion.
TJ, you've got an Alfine on one of your bikes iirc... Equivalent gear range to an 11-34 cassette, with its 308% spread... How do you cope? ๐
Similar to you other guys above, built my ex a Mountain Bike (and she really got into it too, she actually got pretty good), she never once used the big ring, and only ever dropped into the granny ring by accident. Though funnily enough one ride I remember she'd dropped it into the granny by accident, I said "we're on the flat now, why don't you shift back to the middle ring". The respone...
