can anyone recommend any companies that do it (for cycling)?
I'm not sure on exact details (as its for someone else) but it'd be for around 500 riders - in Scotland. Probably some more (smaller) gigs elsewhere too.

Every tagged event I've done that didn't have some sort of timing problem, was using SportIdent.

sportident certainly have most of the market
http://www.emit-uk.com/ is another though
