[#3074744]

Not the right place to ask, but I ain't getting answers elsewhere.

I'm looking at an old 36 mile 2 up TT I'm thinking of resurecting. In the route guide it say the last three miles are timed, what does this mean? Does it mean the ride is based on what you do the last three miles in ie record your three mile time and times it by twelve.

Sounds like the old Kenton event, rode it a few times in the eighties.

That's the one, the Afia Memorial I've got my 1979 programe in front of me. Problem is there is a series of narrow canal bridges that now have traffic lights on them which kind of kills the old route.
I used to be with the Kenton.

Hmmm I wonder if they had tweeked it by then? When I rode it, it started just outside of Dunstable and went past the Ivinghoe Beacon turn into Ivinghoe - Leighton Buzzard - Wing - Bierton - Long Marston - Cheddington, then retraced it's way back.

No High Wycombe riders in the 1979 line up.

OG are you not on the TT forum? If not I suspect you'll probably get answers from people who rode the event(s).

I'd also hazard that the last 3 miles timing may have it's own little prize / results recognition? We have a (very) hilly 25 outside of Brighton in April that has a separate prize for the last 2.5 miles, which are mainly up hill.

The clubs linked to the CTT, a fellow member was asking.

That does sound about right. The old finish was uphill (near Ivinghoe Beacon on the Ridgeway)
Yep you are right. I've just noticed after you mentioned it that there is a prize for the fastest through the timed section.

I'll get Ian Cammish to have a look at this thread and see what he knows.

Yes I rode it ... in 1981 as part of a composite team with Paul Bennett (ex 25 mile record holder). Gino Goddard promoted it. HQ at Gt Gaddesden Village Hall. Started 1/2 mile sth of HQ on the A4146. Sth towards Hemel Hempstead to O'about at 2 1/2 miles where turn and retrace past start to X rds at Travellers Rest B489. Left on B489 to T junction with B488 where right to Ivinghoe where left on B488 towards Leighton Buzzard. In 4 1/2 miles left then bear right to to Ledburn. Left thee to Wingrave. Left to Long Marston where left in village. After 2 mls left and left under railway bridge - in 1 ml to rejoin B489. Left to Ivinghoe (32 miles). Through village to turn left 1/4 mile after Ivinghoe still on B489. Turn right at O about Travellers Rest on to A4146 to finish 300yds south of 4 Ways Garage. (36 miles). Yes...there was a prize for the fastest last 3 miles (won in 1981 by J Rowe and D Worsfold in 6-53). The event was won by Griffiths and Adkins with 1-20-46. Paul and I did 1-21-38. Good turn out with a full field of 60 2-man teams. Ah ... the good old days eh?

to55er Gino was the person that got me riding.
That's slightly different to the route of 1979. But the route you list still goes over two narrow canal bridges which now have traffic lights on them.
Still I'm keen to revive it.

I remember Paul pointing out the bridge where the Great Train Robbery took place. We'd have won if I hadn't stopped to take pics ๐Ÿ™‚

LOL yeah 'Train robbers bridge'

I'm going to try and contact the Kenton, or a fella called Des who I think is/was a mod on Veloriders to see about either ressurecting it or starting something similar.
