I've also got some 8 deg float nukeprrof cleats on my shimsno saint pedals which I much prefer to the normal. This makes we wonder would I prefer a different system?
Has anyone tried either the time speciale 8 or 12? How are they and how do they compare to crank bros pedals or shimano with extra float?

got Time on my MTB and Shimano SPD on my commute bike. Time has much more float though you do have to rotate your foot more to release, which you get used to. In fact going back to SPD's you feel you have to be so much more precise with everything with SPD's, more precise getting your foot in and easier to clip out. No issues getting out of the Time's in a hurry. But with the Times you also get lateral float as well as alot of rotational float which you don't get with SPD's which is nice. They can feel quite 'loose' when coming from SPD's but there is zero play in the forward and aft direction or the up direction, just side to side and rotational. Much more secure than SPD's too. I've pulled out of SPD's in the past but never in Time's.

Never had Crank Bros but believe Time are very similar from people who've had both.

All my bikes have time pedals.
Hard tail has special 8's,
Full suss and road bike have mx4
Other hard tail ass some old control z.

I had a bike nicked in the alps so had to buy some spd for hire bikes. I didn't really notice a huge difference.

I went to time as i had a knee problem. The knee problem cleared up, the pedals keep on going:)

I have pulled of time pedals, I've worn the spring bars. The mx 4 on the full suss are about done after a year in gritty peaks mud.

The specials are about 6 months old and are still in perfect condition

How much support do you get from the cage on the speciale 8s?

I've gradually updated all my bikes from CB to Time's, got xc4,6 and 8 and they are much better than the CB pedals as far as durability goes, more positive engagement and all my shoes used to wobble with Egg Beaters which was annoying. Just got the Speciale's and there's less contact with the platform when clipped in than was hoping for (the bit with the pins doesn't touch the shoe), you might have to go for the 12's if that's what you're after.
