[Closed] Time MX Pedals: Whats the difference?

I thought the MX ones had the frame around them for more support when be Gnarly..

In the XC range i vaguely recall the best VFM being the XC6, big price jump to 8s for virtually no benefits. So i'd probably start shopping around there with the MXs.

I have MX8's and MX4's the only real difference is weight. Performance and durability are very similar. In my experience they are the best pedal I have tried for my style of riding ('enduro')

6 = SLX level. Very capable, very good.
8 = XT level. Equally capable, equally good, just more spanglier and more lighterer. Basically a bit more betterer overall.

So, 6 is what the head buys, 8 is what the heart buys.

Anything above is a bit more spanglier still.

I should say I've been using ATACs for about 20 years now. Favoured Z-controls since they came out and had them on all my MTBs. They're slowly dying though. Got a set of MX4s on my Krampus and they're great (lighter than the old Zs too) and looking at another set of MXs for my Codeine. Just wondering if its worth splashing the cash on the higher end models. Weight saving between each model appears to be about 5g/pedal (except the MX12 which saves more) but the price increase looks to be about £20 per model step. £20 to save 10g seems a bit steep!

Bearings tend to be better higher up as well. I've got XC8 on my gnarmac bike and they are silky smooth. The Zs on my gnarpoon are still going, ten years old. They'll survive the apocalypse.

Quite tempted to switch to Time due to improved reliability over Crank Bros. How does the float compare to Egg Beaters? I need more float than Shimano can provide.

Been using Times for years, the MX is my favourite so far BUT I would go for the higher spec alloy body over the cheaper plastic ones, the cleat/shoe wears the plastic away too quickly and they end up sloppy after about a year - 18 months.

Decision made, nabbed a pair of new MX4s on ebay for £35. Will see how they go.

shep, i moved 4 bikes over from cb. more positive engagement, same float, a factor of zillion improvement in reliability, at least. do it, do not look back. time make brilliant pedals. i can't remember when i last serviced a pedal.

It's worth keeping an eye on the equivalent mavic pedals. Same design. I just bought some mavic cheap on ebay

I've also been using Time pedals for 20+ years, at various price points. Currently running MX2s on both the road and mountain bike, and they're better than much more expensive versions I've had in the past. I had to replace a set on the MTB recently with about 10,000km on them - one of them had started releasing unexpectedly when I pulled back and up on it; might've been wear of the composite, as above, because the actual springs seemed fine, as were the bearings.

I had the original Time Atac. No idea why I switched to Crank Bros. Fashion and novelty I suppose as I couldn't break the Atacs after 10 years. Won't take that long to kill off the CBs so will be "coming home" soon.

I had the same dilemma, ended up with the MX4 and very happy.
(haven't had the same success with the XC4 where the bars shatter when they tap a rock)

I got my MX6's from Germany mucho cheapo compared to here. lovely yellow colour. I had the orginal ATAC pedals since they were released and only changed cause I fanced new ones. Got the original ones on my other bike.

Don't believe that. They'd shout about it if they were any different.

They completely fail to sell the benefits of the more expensive models so over the years I've become convinced there isn't any. Weight saving is minimal until you get to the Ti axles.

Carbon body over standard composite - so? smash it on a rock hard enough and either will break.
Hollow axle - saves 5g?! Benefit? Possibly stiffer but they dont' say. Noticably stiffer? who knows
Oversized axle (and other bits) - 15g off the cheapest. But pedal body is same size so *presumably* the bearings are smaller which doesn't sound like a good idea.

Weight savings are even less on the XC pedals....

My experience is that they last ages but the rebuild kits are expensive so best off running whatever you get at the best price and replacing the entire pedal when the bearings (finally) give up. The second generation pedals went sloppy quickly, everything else has been fine.
