Not really familiar with road stuff but front Tiagra derailier needs replacing, will a 105 one work?

Which model are you talking about? if current Tiagra (4600) and current 105 (5700) yes, as both are 10 speed, if say 4400/4500 & 5600, no as 9 & 10 speed incompatibility, if 4400/4500 & 5500 yes, as both are 9 speed.

I thought all road mechs (regardless of "speeds") were compatible? same with all mtb mechs but not cross compatible.

I run all sorts of front chainset/deraller combinations both MTB and road 10 speed chains with 9 speed rings and shifters, about to try a rear 9 speed mech with a 10 speed block and shfter. Shouldnt work but I'm curious ๐Ÿ™‚

Cheers all, 4600 & 5700 all ten speed doubles so 105 here I come, happily cheaper than a 4600 as well
