I've just had a road bike and done a local cycling club route with a mate. It's about 32 miles, 700m ish of climbing and we averaged 19.5mph. We intend to do it tomorrow, but give it the beans and do draughting. My question is how much faster will draughting make us and how long should each turn on the front be?
You use up to 40% less energy when in the slipstream of something dependant on the shelter you get.
You'd need to do your own maths, not my strong point. Regards the duration of spell it depends say 30 revs then flick for recovery.
we normally do a 10 second stint from the time front/rear wheels pass
I suppose it's still contingent upon how fast the lead rider can move into the wind. I was just looking on Strava and there's a guy who's done it at 22.4 mph so I've a bit of a way to go :/
The bigger the group the shorter the turns. A biggish group of a dozen and you can just keep coming through constantly if you get down to 2 or 3 then you need to start thinking more.
For 2 people I'd be looking at 20-30 seconds at a guess. But then you need to consider that it is less effort sometimes and if you hit a climb and slow down drafting isn't much use.
Makes you far faster. 20mph average over 30 miles sole but in a racing group it would be pretty close to 30mph on a good day.
